Youth engagement and Wellbeing coach
Join the Mental Health team at HMP Durham, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and prison staff. This is a Monday to Friday position, with working hours from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Rethink Mental Illness provides psychological therapy, specifically IAPT Step 1 and 2 services, aligned with national best practices, in several North East prisons, including HMP Durham, HMP Frankland, HMP Holme House, HMP Northumberland, HMYOI Deerbolt, HMP Kirklevington Grange, and HMP & YOI Low Newton.
We focus on health education and self-help by delivering evidence-based, low-intensity interventions grounded in CBT principles. Our aim is to empower individuals in custody to self-manage common mental health conditions.
As a Youth Engagement Health & Wellbeing Coach, you will be part of an integrated care mental health team, delivering IAPT Step 1 interventions. Your work will involve supporting young people in engaging with adult mental health services within a prison environment. You'll help individuals manage their recovery, building trust and creating therapeutic relationships in a non-judgmental manner.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing informal information, support, and signposting during reception
- Facilitating group activities and forums
- Developing and training Peer Mentors
- Delivering service user engagement activities
- Collaborating with mental health team members to provide high-quality mental health support during an individual's time in prison and assisting with their transition back into the community.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience working with young adults with mental health needs (both 1-to-1 and group settings) in a coaching and goal-setting capacity.
- Experience in developing and coordinating projects and activities.
- Strong group facilitation skills, active listening, and rapport-building abilities.
- Relevant training or qualifications, such as Train the Trainer, Recovery Training, Peer Support Worker, or Coaching.
- Knowledge and understanding of mental health and the ability to identify signs of deteriorating mental health.
- Experience working in a recovery-focused manner and delivering recovery education.
- Ability to support and encourage young people, particularly those from marginalized communities, to advocate for themselves and lead within their communities.
- Flexibility to travel to HMP Durham, our regional office in Gateshead, and other North East prisons if necessary.
