Job overview

University College London Hospitals undertakes world-class research across many specialities including cancer, neurology, stroke, rheumatology, and early phase medicine. In this role you will be a key part of facilitating this research. You will be an integral part of a team of clinical trial senior pharmacists who provide a high-quality dispensary and production service, thereby giving access to new, ground-breaking treatments to patients via study protocols. The postholder will demonstrate leadership, oversight, finance, risk assessment, audit, and inspection skills. A GPhC-registered, pharmacist with at least 2 years’ post registration experience in an NHS hospital healthcare setting would be well suited. The post holder will be well supported by the Principal Pharmacist R&D and the Principal Pharmacist for Clinical Trials.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose

The post-holder will be trained to assist the Principal Pharmacist R&D and the Principal Pharmacist for medicines optimisation and clinical trials in the following:

Plan and participate in the risk assessment of clinical trials with respect to systems, patients, and staff at UCLH Participate in the management and development of the pharmacy clinical trial service at UCLH Deputise for the Principal Pharmacist Clinical Trials when appropriate. Oversee the day-to-day smooth running of the operational and dispensary functions of the pharmacy clinical trials team. Oversee and participate in the mentoring and development of the clinical trial technical team. Be accountable for the preparation of financial reconciliation of activities Attend feasibility meetings to communicate feedback for our services for safety, capacity, and capability. Review clinical trials and provide continual progress data on Q-pulse Provide advice and make sound decisions for the wider research community when appropriate and know when to escalate to the Principal Pharmacists in clinical trials.

Pharmacy Clinical Trials

The Pharmacy Clinical Trials Unit (PCTU) sits within the Pharmacy department. PCTU consists of a team of 22 dedicated pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and assistants whose role is to deliver the timely opening of Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicines.

PCTU supports approximately 500 commercial and non-commercial studies at any given time across four sites within UCLH.

Pharmacy Department

UCLH Pharmacy provides a comprehensive array of services across all clinical sites of the trust with the overall aim of ensuring safe, effective, and economical use of medicines throughout the Trust, and supporting education, training, and research. Pharmacy is closely involved in all stages of medicines use, from negotiation of contracts for purchase through to assessment of treatment outcomes in the clinical setting, and at all stages in between.
