Job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available within the Medical Care Clinical Business Unit (CBU) for an inspirational, driven and motivated Service Manager. You will join the CBU management team having your own portfolio working in a fast-paced environment, assisting with operational management and strategic direction for Critical Care, Respiratory and Palliative Care Services.

The role will support the Trust's mission "We will be OUTSTANDING for our patients, our communities and each other".

To be successful in this role, you will need to have significant operational experience of working in the NHS.

If you are an experienced, motivated and independently minded leader who is able to act on your own initiative we would be delighted to hear from you.

Depending on prior qualifications and experience, this role may be suited to an apprenticeship. As an Apprentice at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the postholder will complete Senior Leaders PGDip qualification and will develop the skills and knowledge detailed below. The postholder will be allocated time to achieve the award and will be expected to attend study sessions with a local training provider.

We are also keen to develop our staff and therefore there is an option to join the team under Annexe 21 arrangements where you will be supported with a develop plan to gain all of the skills, knowledge and experience to grow into this role.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Care Business Unit (CBU) hosts several specialities, Critical Care, Respiratory, Cardiology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Palliative Care, Dermatology and Neurology Services. We collectively work together to deliver the Quality, People and Sustainability framework putting patients at the heart of everything we do. We have a "can do" attitude and promote a culture that learns from mistakes.

Working within the Medical Care CBU you will work with the Clinical Lead and Matron within the specialties leading on the implementation of patient centered clinical operational strategy and plans, linking with internal and external stakeholders. Ensuring the provision of high quality, safe services in line with performance indicators is key to this role as you will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of aspects of operational performance including key performance indicators as well as finance and governance arrangements.

Reporting to the CBU Manager you will be expected to function at a senior level proactively leading and engaging teams. You will also be expected to deputise for the Clinical Business Manager.

Candidates must be able to participate in the Trust senior manager on call (SMOC) as required through the Trust on call rota.

With a can do leadership style the Critical Care, Respiratory and Palliative Care Service Manager will thrive within a climate of constant change managing the strategic direction and performance of Critical Care, Respiratory and Palliative Care Services within the Medical Care CBU.

The role will be responsible for the development of Critical Care services, ensuring the achievement of CQC and Cheshire and Merseyside Critical Care Network (CMCCN)standards. The role will provide expert knowledge and support the achievement and maintenance of Critical Care Network Standards developed from national specifications and guidelines including National Service Specification for Adult Critical Care and Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care Services (GPICS).

Reporting to the CBU Manager, the post holder is expected to function at a senior level within the CBU team, proactively leading and providing solutions to resolve complex service issues, in accordance with agreed Trust objectives, targets, quality standards and resource constraints. The Service Manager will have managerial experience in leading teams and will possess leadership skills to deal competently with complex issues in ensuring that policy is implemented and performance managed within Critical Care, Respiratory and Palliative Care services.

The Service Manager will be expected to deputise for the Clinical Business Manager.

The Service Manager will be expected to participate in the Trust senior manager on call (SMOC) as required through the Trust on call rota.

oRecent experience at a senior level, with responsibility for operational delivery including clinical quality, people management, budget responsibility and successful delivery of performance targets within strict financial controls.

oHigh level understanding of Critical Care services and the key issues and pace of changing facing the service nationally and locally. oCoaching & values led leadership style, encouraging engagement and empowerment amongst staff and stakeholders, and in developing high performing teams oA high level of communication skills, to include but not exclusively, mediation, negotiation, consultation, facilitation, presentation, training and coaching skills using well developed interpersonal skills to influence, inform, reconcile differences and resolve conflicts. oCoordinate and lead Care Group activity to meet challenging performance targets within tight financial controls oWorking with the CBU Manager, formulate creative vision and clinical strategy for the services, reflecting the health needs of the local population, spotting opportunities for business development, and representing patient and service delivery needs in robust annual business, workforce and financial plans.
