Job summary

One post-CCT Glaucoma Fellow is required, based at the King's College Hospital Denmark Hill site. The posts would suit experienced trainees wishing to consolidate their glaucoma experience and to gain further experience in managing complex glaucoma and undertaking advanced surgical techniques, including aqueous shunts, glaucoma revision surgery, trabeculectomy, Preserflo Microshunt and less invasive glaucoma surgery, including IStent implants and glaucoma Laser procedures. Consultant surgical training and supervision will be provided with dedicated glaucoma theatre sessions. The appointees should be able to competently undertake cataract surgery, as it is expected that the appointees will undertake cataract surgery in challenging cases and supervise junior trainees.

Main duties of the job

Regular clinical duties include the management of out-patients and in-patients, including ward referrals. Post-holders will be expected to take part in the on-call rota at King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill site), which includes provision of ophthalmic care to patients of Lewisham Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital. Urgent referrals from General Practitioners, Optometrists, and the Accident & Emergency Departments of King's College and Lewisham Hospitals, are generally managed within the booked appointment system of the King's Rapid Eye Service (KRES) or Rapid Access Unit, but patients may be referred to the on-call team for emergency management. Post holders will participate in virtual and face to face outpatient clinics, have regular theatre list exposure, and also have one weekly KRES or RAU session. additionally, timetable will include regular CPD and teaching sessions.

The post-holders will be expected to contribute and participate in the Department's ongoing clinical audit programme, and will carry out all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. The post-holders will also have a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with these posts.

Job responsibilities

This is a full-time clinical post, potentially based at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill (DH). Working within a multidisciplinary team to provide elective and emergency care for ophthalmology patients within the glaucoma service. Tenure of the post is for 12 months from 1 August 2024.

This is an ideal post for senior trainees who already have basic subspecialty training in glaucoma and are seeking to broaden their experience in managing complex primary and secondary glaucoma. With 1 and a half, or 2 dedicated weekly theatre lists, the post-holders will receive advanced one-to-one training in the full range of glaucoma surgery, including trabeculectomy and drainage implant surgery, as well as Istent, Omni canaloplasty/ trabeculotomy, Preserflo, goniosynechialysis and bleb revisions. In addition, advanced cataract surgical techniques will be taught under the supervision of the glaucoma consultants.

Applicants must have MRCOphth or equivalent, be registered with licence to practise with the GMC at the time of appointment, and be eligible to work in England. Applicants must be proficient in undertaking cataract surgery independently and should have prior surgical experience of glaucoma surgery.

The posholder will be expected to contribute and participate in the Departments ongoing clinical audit programme, and will carry out all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. The postholder holder also has a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

The post holder will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Departmental meetings are held monthly on Friday afternoon. The postgraduate teaching programme is held weekly on Friday afternoons and include consultation clinic, audit sessions and journal clubs. In addition, there are 4 regional meetings throughout the South East Region.

Qualifications / Registration

Essential

Medical Degree MRCOphth or equivalent GMC registration and Licence to Practice

Experience/Skills

Essential

Wide experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research. Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff.

Desirable

Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes. Management course and / or qualification.

Academic Achievements

Essential

Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.

Desirable

Publication of relevant review articles or case reports. Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Ophthalmology.
