Job summary

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our highly regarded specialist palliative care team. This is an 8PA fixed term post based at our Specialist Palliative Care Inpatient Unit at the Northern General Hospital. The successful candidate will join the established MDT on the Unit and contribute to teaching. There is no on call requirement with this post, and it is fixed term for 6 months.

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide consultant responsibility for up to 9 inpatients to the specialist palliative care inpatient unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. This is an 18 bed NHS funded unit offering the full range of inpatient specialist care services including medical and nursing expertise, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, specialist pharmacy, chaplaincy, psychology and complimentary therapies. It is on the acute site with access to the full range of diagnostic and support services. There are close working relationships with the hospital palliative care support team, the specialist palliative care community team, the district nursing team and primary care. Referrals are accepted from community teams and for transfer internally from the acute hospital. We provide inpatient care for patients with malignant and non-malignant advanced progressive illness who have complex symptom control needs and specialist end of life care.

There is a citywide shared consultant on call service which also covers St Luke's Hospice, however this post has no regular on call requirements associated with post holder will work in collaboration with other Consultants in Palliative Medicine and the wider palliative care team to achieve service aims and support service developments in palliative care.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

Full registration (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC at time of appointment with a licence to practise. Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: (a) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview, or (b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). MRCP or MRCGP or equivalent Relevant higher professional training

Desirable

Postgraduate qualifications PGDip in Palliative Medicine Teaching qualification or relevant training ( Cert Med Ed) MD or PhD

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Essential

Proven clinical experience in Palliative Medicine across different settings for a broad spectrum of life-limiting conditions and patients with complex needs. Management of and responsibility for own caseload, contribution to MDTs, and the provision of expert clinical opinion to colleagues in a variety of settings and clinical situations, including remotely as telephone advice. Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the Palliative Medicine.

Experience of other relevant specialties, Primary Care, Anaesthetics, Oncology, Psychiatry

COMPETENCE AND SPECIAL SKILLS

Essential

Demonstrable clinical competence in Palliative Medicine Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to gain trust and confidence of patients, carers and multi-disciplinary colleagues. Confident in performing daily tasks using electronic systems ( Electronic Patient Records) and programmes ( Microsoft Word, Outlook and MS Teams).

RESEARCH

Essential

Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where relevant.

Desirable

Publication of research studies in peer reviewed journals. GCP training certificate

TEACHING AND TRAINING

Essential

Experience of teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff

CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Essential

Evidence of participating in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.

Desirable

Maintenance of CPD diary or portfolio

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

Essential

Ability to work effectively with administration and management colleagues. Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND AUDIT

Essential

Experience in performing clinical audit.

Desirable

Training in service improvement methodology Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project
