Job summary

The Shropshire Paediatric Psychology Service is passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people with physical health conditions. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and committed Clinical Psychologist to join our well-established, friendly and dedicated team. This post involves working as a psychological lead within Paediatric Diabetes and contributing to clinical and operational leadership within The Paediatric Psychology Service.

The Paediatric Psychology Service works with children, young people and families across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. A committed team of Paediatric Clinical Psychologists (with dedicated Assistant Psychologist and Office Manager support) work into a range of medical specialties, providing targeted support to children/young people and their families and embedding psychological healthcare within and across the medical teams. We are looking for an experienced Clinical Psychologist with a passion for working in young people's physical health settings and an ability and readiness to work at a clinical leadership level, to steer forwards some exciting new developments both within Paediatric Diabetes and across the Paediatric Psychology Service.

Main duties of the job

This role involves providing specialist psychological assessment, formulation and intervention with children/families experiencing psychological difficulties in relation to their diabetes. You will also provide clinical supervision/consultation within the diabetes team, embedding psychological thinking throughout the service and supporting multidisciplinary colleagues. As clinical lead, you will be central to service/strategic developments within diabetes and supervising Clinical Psychologists within the diabetes team and across the broader service.

Within the Paediatric Psychology service, you will work with the Service Manager to contribute to clinical and operational leadership. This opportunity comes at an exciting time as we work on taking forward recommendations from a recent, highly valued peer review, to deliver new initiatives across the service.

This post is supported by a compassionate staff team, with direct supervision from the Service Manager/Professional lead for Children's Clinical Psychology. The service is committed to regular peer supervision, safeguarding supervision and broader team support from psychologists working in physical health across our local system/region. The ethos of the psychology team places high value on actively supporting the wellbeing of every staff member, to promote enjoyment at work and the delivery of high quality, compassionate care.

Training and Qualifications

Essential

Honours degree in Psychology. Eligible for Graduate Membership of BPS. Post-graduate Doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of interventions for children and young people with physical health needs, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology. Full registration with HCPC.

Experience

Essential

Significant post-registration experience of specialist psychological assessment and intervention with children and young people with physical health needs and their families and a range of psychological needs of a complex nature. Experience of specialist psychological assessment and interventions with children, young people and their families across the full range of care settings, including inpatient paediatric wards, community services, primary care. Experience of running groups and group work with children and families/carers. Experience of working with a variety of patient groups, across the whole life course and presenting across the range of clinical severity, across the range of care settings. Experience of maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems. Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for patient's psychological care and treatment. Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision and delegated line management responsibilities.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies and evidence base with regard to services for children and young people and their families. Skills in providing consultation and teaching/training to other professional and non-professional groups. Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology.
