This is a full-time permanent position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.

Responsible for: No line management responsibility but will deputise for the Lead Biological Safety Specialist.

Conducting world-class biomedical research safely, sustainably and successfully in central London is a significant undertaking. The scale and complexity of the science requires a highly professional and effective Health and Safety team.

The Biological Safety Specialist will assist the LBSS on tasks related to managing the Biosafety team to ensure it supports cutting edge science by monitoring and advising on biological, health, safety and regulatory compliance issues, specifically working with Crick members and other stakeholders. This role will support in the delivery of the H&S Strategy for Biological safety, oversee and advise when required, on the management and operation of the Containment 2, 3 and 4 facilities.

The BSS will be required to provide competent advice to support the wide range or research undertaken at the Crick covering GMOs, biological risk assessment, containment and control best practice, management of High Containment facilities and best practice SOP advise and development. Perform active monitoring including safety inspections and investigations, with subsequent production of written reports and some budgetary responsibility. The role will call for excellent interpersonal skills and dedication to compliance, establishing, maintaining and reviewing Safety Policy in line with changes in legislation, best practice and identified problems through appropriate risk assessment.

Key responsibilities

These include but are not limited to:

Advice and support

Assist with setting work priorities and objectives for the Biosafety team, under the advice of the LBSS.

Support and promote best practice in biological safety.

Work with the Biosafety team to provide professional, efficient and effective support to science Group Leaders, Laboratory Research Scientists, Heads of Science Technology Platforms, the Service Delivery Team and other operational services.

Periodically attend the Biological and GM committee meetings and ensure it fulfils the terms of reference, when required.

Be a point of escalation, providing generalist and specialist advice across the Institute, particularly within the research groups and science support teams.

Working closely with the LBSS to devise and deliver the biological safety management system, by identifying, planning, implementing policies and procedures as delivered by the Biosafety Team.

Act as subject matter expert, advising the Institute of best practices for biological safety, overseeing some operations of biological facilities at containment levels 2, 3 and 4.

Lead in the delivery of timely investigations of accidents and incidents, ensuring root causes are identified, that lessons are learnt and that appropriate measures are implemented.

Lead audits and inspections, working risk owners to take action and mitigate risk.

Work with the Policy and Assurance team to identify trends and monitor KPIs related to biological safety.

Working with the Training and Competency Manager, lead on the delivery and development of biological safety related training and support the management of training programmes and records.

Support the LBSS when liaising with Regulators and associated intervention visits, manage the implementation of subsequent follow up actions and report submission.

Work closely with the LBSS to ensure regulatory requirements are met for work under the Specified Animal Pathogens Order (SAPO).

Provide advice on wild type micro-organisms, Genetically Modified Organisms, Cell-lines and tissues or materials derived from humans for animals.

Review of health and safety risk assessments including biological and genetically modified organisms risk assessments and provide constructive advice where required. 

Assist, and where applicable, lead and/or review biological risk assessments

In collaboration with the Policy & Assurance Team, develop and produce written health and safety standards, procedures and guidance, ensuring the information is kept up to date and reflects change in operational delivery and legislation.

Support the management of and provide advice on;

contract work within containment facilities.

receipt and transfer of biological samples and hazardous goods.

the health surveillance provision for biological safety risks. Maintain and develop professional competency and knowledge through training and memberships

Change and improvement

Liaise with University Partners in matters of Biological Safety

Maintain and develop subject knowledge through attending meetings, networking with other containment level 4 groups and undertaking training when required.

Champion the improvement of safety, health and wellbeing across the Crick.

Support the wider H&S team with key expertise, communication and consultation on health and safety. Run, or assist with, campaigns and initiatives for the positive promotion of health, safety and wellbeing as required.

Act as subject matter expert on biosafety-related projects, initiatives and process improvements, including leading or participating in working groups as required, to contribute to continuous improvement at the Crick.

To work collaboratively with other support services to deliver integrated and efficient support.

Key experience and competencies

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, open and collegial, in addition to the following:

Essential:

Degree in a life science or related discipline (or equivalent)

Certification in biosafety, e.g., Biosafety Level 1.

Level 3 Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent qualification with experience

Significant experience in biosafety management, preferably in a research or laboratory setting.

Demonstrated knowledge of applicable biosafety regulations.

Experience with risk assessment methodologies and implementation of control measures and good practice.

Able to respond to emergencies in a calm manner.

Experience in Laboratory hazards, associated controls and working practices including chemical, biological or radiation safety.

Experience of reviewing of GMO and biological risk assessments and assisting with associated committees.

Practical experience in the design/refurbishment of containment level 3 laboratories, including compliance to SAPO and ATCSA containment requirements.

Technical understanding of containment and control principals

Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, with an ability to influence, engage and build relationships with staff at all levels. To change style and focus when needed, including being enabling and supportive or firm but tactful if needed.

Work effectively as a member of a team but also on own initiative.

Ability to work effectively in a complex and fast paced environment with strong problem-solving skills, with a pragmatic approach to solutions.

Experience of using databases and/or spreadsheets, data analysis and ability to use data to produce meaningful reports.

The ability to act with discretion and to maintain confidentiality.

Able to work outside normal office hours where required.

Excellent written skills, with an ability to write reports and translate technical information for non-technical audiences.

Desirable

Level 5 Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification with experience

Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) qualification

Strong attention to detail with a proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Experience of managing Regulatory inspections

Experience of delivering safety training including emergencies in high containment

Relevant membership of professional body e.g. IOSH, RBS, ISTR will be a bonus.
