Assistant Manager Corporate Responsibility

Birmingham Airport is the UK’s seventh largest with 30 airlines serving over 120 destinations direct and onwards to over 400. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic 13m customers a year flew in and out of BHX. Going forward we project growth to more than 18m customers a year by 2033 – by which time we will be connected to central London by HS2 trains in just 37 minutes and aim to have become a net zero carbon airport.

Summary of the Role

Reporting to the Corporate Responsibility Manager, the Corporate Responsibility Assistant Manager will work closely with and support the Corporate Responsibility Manager to deliver key elements of the Company’s Corporate Responsibility programmes. The role will have a specific focus on delivering community investment, support for education and employee volunteering, among other tasks.

The role holder will provide ad-hoc support as required across the other functions within the Sustainability Team, which covers all areas of Birmingham Airport’s Sustainability Strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fulfil the role of Trust Fund Secretary by administering the Birmingham Airport Community Trust Fund, including the efficient management of applications, providing a first point of contact for applicants, Trustees and airport colleagues, and ensuring the effective promotion of the Fund to relevant stakeholders. Increase use of The Learning Hub as an educational facility for schools, colleges and community groups, acting as lead contact for the day-to-day management of the facility and developing appropriate programmes and materials to meet the needs of a range of stakeholders. Co-ordinate the Company’s employee volunteering programme, increase the number and range of volunteering opportunities for BAL employees and develop a culture of volunteering within the Company. This will involve working with community stakeholders to initiate volunteering opportunities and supporting employees throughout the process. Develop the Company’s relationship with its Corporate Charity Partner and engage staff in fundraising and volunteering activities, responding appropriately to other requests for charitable support and identifying opportunities for community investment in line with relevant Company policies. Increase awareness of Birmingham Airport and its positive contribution to the region by delivering presentations to community and other stakeholder groups. Measure the effectiveness of the Airport’s Corporate Responsibility activities and report to internal and external stakeholders. Develop an understanding of the roles of other members of the Sustainability Team and provide support as appropriate. Undertake other duties relevant to the Sustainability Team as directed, including occasional out-of-hours and weekend working.

Candidate requirements

A degree in a corporate responsibility discipline and/or experience in a corporate responsibility/sustainability role is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and sustain productive relationships with a wide range of external and internal stakeholders. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience of public speaking. Demonstrable experience of working independently. Ability to recognise opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of the role and confidence in developing and implementing new working practices. Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and prioritise as appropriate. Experience of managing and resolving customer complaints and/or having difficult conversations with stakeholders. Ability to demonstrate empathy and resilience when dealing with stakeholders. Understanding of key concepts surrounding Corporate Responsibility and how they can contribute to the overall success of the business.
