The aspirations for our patient focused services are bold We are a forward thinking team that prides itself on providing high quality clinical care. We aim to have a true 7 day service and, to realise that aim, we are increasing our consultant physician workforce by 50% over the next 2 years. There will also be a marked increase in junior medical staff to support. We are looking for dynamic and motivated Geriatrician Consultants to join our friendly and dynamic team, to develop and embed high quality care for the frail and older patient in a number of different clinical settings.

As we expand key services and frailty pathways to benefit the frail and older patient, we are developing and enhancing our elderly care and frailty strategy to expand sub-specialties, including Acute Frailty (SDEC), Complex Frailty Units, Frailty Specialist Units, Movement Disorder Services, Ortho-Geri's, Surgical Liaison, Virtual Wards and Outpatient activity.

Main duties of the job

The basic whole-time contract is for 10 programmed activities (PAs) 8.5 DCC (1.5 PAs admin time and educational supervision time included within this) + additional 1.5 SPA.

The job plan is indicative only and is negotiable to take the candidates aspirations/special interest/part time working into account. There will be a discussion with successful candidates regarding the final job plan/on-call arrangements, prior to the interview and appointment to ensure the job plan reflects both the individuals and organisation goals.

Additional programmed PAs may be available for additional activities and specialist interests if desired. Additional SPA time may be available depending on individual and service requirements.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

The post holder will be expected:

To undertake clinical work in conjunction with colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop Elderly Care services and to develop specialist skills in accordance with the needs of the department.

Responsibility in conjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of the service.

Will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service alongside Consultant colleagues.

Expectation to cover colleagues in their absence and ensure continuous patient care.

For management purposes and use of resources, accountable to the Clinical Director of the Medical Directorate and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

Responsible for the professional and educational supervision of junior medical staff.

Expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.

Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful applications to the local research and development committee.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) responsibility for ensuring that you meet the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external. Attend regularly, and contribute to, the weekly half-day educational activities held by the Care Group. The Trust supports requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the Royal Colleges and is committed to providing support for these activities.

Actively participate in clinical audit.

Participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines and in respect of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current best practice.
