Job summary

The Senior Staff Nurse for Quality is to deputise for the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse when required and has delegated responsibility for the management of the clinical areas including assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards on a shift basis.

The Senior Staff Nurse for Quality will participate in innovation and evidence based nursing practice through professional leadership and supporting the clinical team in close liaison with the Sister/Charge Nurse and Junior Sister/Charge Nurse.

The Senior Staff Nurse for Quality will act as a credible and professional role model and encourage and empower other staff to develop both personally and professionally to achieve their maximum potential.

Main duties of the job

The SSN Quality will lead on the development of care standards to reflect the "Proud to Care" initiatives

o Lead on specific innovative initiatives at ward level as agreed with the Ward Charge Nurse.

o To liaise with the corporate quality, education and governance Departments in the delivery of specific corporate quality initiatives as described in the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP and Strategy

o To actively engage in the delivery of the Clinical Excellence Framework

o To actively seek the views of patients in their clinical area about their experience using the corporate tools available

o To share and implement learning and knowledge gained from the corporate and national quality agenda

We provide a 24 hour Primary PCI service with our own dedicated emergency portal via a 13 bedded Coronary care unit providing invasive and none invasive care for patients with acute coronary syndromes and life threatening arrhythmias. Part of this role will require taking part in an on call service.

Senior Staff Nurse for Quality will lead on the implement and development plans which involve the induction, mentoring preceptorship and the ongoing professional development of all staff on the Unit. This will also include ensuring robust systems are in place to record and monitor ward performance

Key Areas/Tasks

Facilitate communication, which results in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi-professional team There is an essential requirement to exchange verbal and written information with patients, staff and carers requiring tact and diplomacy. The post holder needs to ensure that all barriers to understanding are overcome by using differing strategies to meet individual need. Safer Care Bundle:- ensure appropriate system are in place for the safe and timely discharge of patients including EDD, patient choice leaflets and that patients and their carers are consulted with regarding discharge planning. Attend and be an active member of Directorate/ Divisional meetings and working groups. Ensure that patient concerns are addressed on the ward/department and work with the Patient Advisory and Liaison Service (PALS) and patient forums. Participate in the resolution of complaints / adverse incidents and implement action plans to prevent re-occurrence. It is expected that ALL employees of the Trust will take part in the appraisal process each year with the first appraisal taking place within the first 6 months from appointment. Hold regular minuted ward / department meetings as a means to provide an opportunity to share information and suggestions and to problem solve Current NMC registration Degree level qualification in Health/Nursing Related Studies

Evidence of a specialist qualification in Cardiology nursing

Minimum 18 months experience in cardiology nursing

Have experience of teaching and assessing Formal leadership and management training Minimum of 3 years post registration experience to include 1 year experience of taking charge of a ward/department on a shift basis. Ability to lead change and lead new ways of working The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code: Professional standards of practice for nurses and midwives and reflect the Trusts policies, procedures standards and guidelines. The post holder will demonstrate the skills for assessing and interpreting specialist acute and other patient conditions, initiating actions as appropriate. Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints and serious untoward incident and other significant events, completing require root cause analysis on time and ensuring resulting action plans are implemented and evaluated. Timely management of the Datix system and SafeCare red flags. The post holder will prioritise, plan workload and organise own time and that of the nursing team on the ward. Contribute to the principles of clinical governance ensuring that quality standards are set and monitored. Ensure that clinical risk management and clinical audit are an integral part of the ward function. Leads on the planning and organisation of staff delegation and activity for patients, planning and making short term adjustments to duty rosters ensuring that duty rosters are compliant with the golden rules of e-rostering, interrogating to Insight staffing report from Allocate software with Matron. Timely completion of SafeCare to assess need. Required to co-ordinate activities with other professional agencies. Ensure that staff within the clinical areas have access to and are aware of most recent national and local policies which impact and effect the delivery of nursing / midwifery care. The post holder will be required to have the dexterity and accuracy required for procedure such as venepuncture, cannulation and administration of intravenous drugs and is able to demonstrate clinical skills. The post holder will be required to have standard keyboard skills, use of presentation, projection/multimedia equipment and e-learning resources. To act in accordance with the NMC Code: Code: Professional standards of practice for nurses and midwives and to be accountable for own clinical practice and professional actions at all times. Ensure continued and effective registration with the NMC. Develop programmes of care / care packages providing specialised advice concerning care. Implement evidence based guidance on the prevention and control of hospital acquired infection Ensuring the care provided reflects the requirements of CQC, Proud to care, Safety Express and other nursing initiatives. Implements policies and procedures, and proposes changes to practices for own area, contributing to the development of specialist protocols. Develops new policies and standard operating procedures relevant to their sphere of working and share practice across the Trust Demonstrate safe working practices in the use of equipment in the clinical areas with accurate monitoring of individual asset register. Demonstrate effective management of the pay and non-pay budget for the ward/department on a day to day basis to ensure efficient use of available resources. As part of the Trusts recruitment and retention strategies be involved in the undertaking of exit interviews for staff who leave the Trust. Regularly required to handle patient valuables. Take part in monthly performance reviews

Monitor and manage sickness with regular review of sickness absence levels in the clinical area in accordance with the Trusts sickness and absence policy.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff for the ward/department.

Contribute to the formal induction of all new staff.

Participate in the preceptorship of newly appointed staff and the education of learners and clinical support workers

Provide appropriate education, training and development opportunities to enhance staff performance in line with ward/department training needs analysis.

Ensure clinical supervision/reflection is available on the ward / department
