Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a clinically qualified individual to join the growing and dynamic neurology department at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post is a substantive post replacing current roles in Movement Disorders and General Neurology.

St George's has a dedicated Movement Disorders Service managing secondary and tertiary care Movement Disorders referrals from South-West London and Surrey. The Movement Disorders group includes dedicated clinics for the assessment and treatment of complex movement disorders including Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia and incorporates the fastest growing functional neurosurgery service in the UK.

We have a large population of patients treated with device assisted therapy (Apomorphine and Duodopa) as well as a dedicated Tic and Tourette's clinic and an ataxia clinic. We have an extensive botulinum toxin injection service for dystonia and tremor, including working closely with ENT and performing procedures with EMG and USS guidance.

The Movement Disorders group includes provision of in-reach support to ward-based patients on the Clinical Neurosciences wards as well as in-patients in the wider Hospital.

You would be joining a team comprising several Consultant Neurologists with sub-specialist clinical and research interests in Movement Disorders Neurology, three experienced Parkinson's Disease Clinical Nurse Specialists as well as a Nursing Associate.

Main duties of the job

The Movement Disorder role will be dedicated to Botulinum Toxin including EMG and USS guided procedures but the post holder will also contribute to all aspects of Neurology at St George's including General Neurology Clinic, joining the Attending rota on the Neuroscience Ward (4 weeks a year) and the Neurology on call rota (1 or 2 week ends per year) assessing and triaging referrals, contributing to audits and other aspects of clinical governance and helping to develop the service.

About us

St George's Hospital is the main teaching hospital in the western sector of the South Thames region, and as such has developed links with most district general hospitals throughout South Thames West, and supports a significant training programme for junior doctors who rotate through the Trust.

The Trust is on three sites, St George's Hospital, the base for acute general medicine and surgical services,Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton (QMR), and St John's Therapy Centre, Battersea, where services for care of elderly patients previously at Bolingbroke Hospital are now based. The Trust serves a resident population of about 300,000 and serves two local Primary Care Trusts, Wandsworth and Merton which have a total population of approximately 600,000 between them.

As well as acute hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist and community hospital-based care and a full range of community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, 11 health centres and clinics, schools and nurseries, patients' homes and Wandsworth Prison.

Neurology is part of the Neurosciences Clinical Directorate, which sits within the Division of Surgery, Neurosciences, Cancer, Theatres & Anaesthetics.

Job responsibilities

The Movement Disorders service at St Georges is a predominantly outpatient based regional service that provides assessment, investigations, advice and treatment to patients with all forms of Movement Disorders. The service acts as a secondary care service for South West London and a specialist tertiary referral service (including advanced PD therapies) for Southwest London, Surrey and beyond, working collaboratively with Consultants at the DGHs.

The team provide an in-patient liaison service for patients admitted with Movement Disorders to St Georges, principally via the PD CNSs within the team.

The team runs regular outpatient clinics including sub-specialist movement disorders with expertise in dystonia, ataxia, tics and complex Parkinsons disease, requiring advanced therapies. We have the fastest expanding Movement Disorders Surgery service in the UK (Mr Erlick Pereira, Consultant Neurosurgeon) and the postholder will be expected to support that clinical and academic service.

There is a large botulinum toxin service treating many forms of dystonia and also tremor, in some cases working with ENT colleagues and treating more complex cases with EMG and/or USS guidance.

This new post is to support growing demand for the regional service and to support anticipated service developments in Movement Disorders Surgery.

The post holder may contribute to all aspects of neurology including the Attending rota on the Neuroscience Ward (4 weeks a year) and the Neurology on call rota (1 or 2 weekends per year). Neurology on calls are Category B low frequency.
