Main duties of the job

The Rheumatology Unit comprises a clinical team of medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, clinical nurse specialists and specially trained nurses for the inpatients. The Head of the Academic Unit is Prof. Lucy Wedderburn and the clinical lead is Dr Muthana Al Obaidi.  There are a total of 7 consultants. One of these consultants will be in charge of inpatient care at any one time but all hold regular Outpatient Clinics.  Adolescents are cared for at the Adolescent Centre at the University College Hospital, and some of the senior consultant staff work at both sites.

 

The Clinical Unit is a National Referral Centre for Paediatric Rheumatology and comprises outpatient, Daycare and ambulatory facilities, as well as a 10 bed inpatient unit which is shared with Dermatology, Infectious Disease and Immunology.  A clinician’s assistant is available to help with administrative work for daycases and inpatients. The clinical fellows and SpRs are responsible for the inpatient unit on a rotational basis, as well as looking after the ambulatory patients, attending outpatient clinics and performing joint injections. The annual inpatient numbers is in excess of 500 and the total number of FCEs is approximately 3, There is a wide spectrum of rheumatic diseases seen within the unit with a concentration towards the more complex multisystem inflammatory diseases. The SHO is a newly created post to help mainly in the day case and inpatient unit.

Academic/Professional qualification/TrainingEssential criteria
  • Previous paediatric training
  • Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice or Eligible to register, will need IELTS Certificate with an overall score of or Occupational English Test (medicine version) with a minimum score of ‘B’ in each domain.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
