The post holder will be able to contribute to the ongoing development of the Team that will enable all young people accessing mental health services to have access to a timely, evidence-based assessment, as well as inform post diagnostic input to ensure young people's experience is high quality and appropriate to guide their care going forwards.

We are keen to hear from speech and language therapists who are enthusiastic and creative in their approach to service delivery and committed to improving the lives of neurodivergent children and young people.Although this is a Band 7 post, we are keen to receive applications from qualified SLT who have some knowledge and a particular interest in working with Autistic children and young people who experience mental health difficulties, and who would be interested in a preceptorship from Band 6 to Band 7 in this specialist area.

There is a commitment across Birmingham to enhance service provision for autistic people and we are excited to hear from people who want to join us on the journey to improve services.

Main duties of the job

The teams use a range of assessment skills, including formal psychometric tests, diagnostic assessments (such as the ADOS 2, DISCO, ADI-R, CELF-5 etc.), interviews with parent/carer(s) and observations in a range of settings, to inform the assessment and diagnostic process as well as the planning and provision of interventions. The post holder will be offered training in assessment tools required for the role and be supported in the implementation of these by existing team members to support skill development. Specialist supervision will be offered by experienced speech and language therapists within the mental health division as well as from colleagues from clinical psychology and psychiatry. The post holder will have the opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary colleagues in mental health teams offering specialist consultation and advice to inform care planning and intervention for Autistic young people as well as deliver education and training to parents, carers and colleagues.
