Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and motivated MSK Clinician with a specific interest in Hands to join our Specialist Musculoskeletal team. This development role will support you working through a competency framework to then transition to a Band 8 Clinical Specialist role.

Referrals into the Specialist MSK service are from MSK physiotherapy, FCP, GP or self-referral. Advanced clinical reasoning, investigative and analytical skills are required to ensure the appropriate investigation are undertaken, and to facilitate decision making regarding most appropriate management options, ensuring delivery of high quality evidence based care.

You will work alongside an experienced team of Specialists, Clinical Leads and MSK Consultant Practitioners who are key to driving the development of the service. There are opportunities to be involved in Service Improvement, Audit, Research and Quality Improvement. CPD and mentorship is integral to effective service delivery and you will have regular supervision and training. You will also actively support more junior colleges within the Physiotherapy service. A post graduate qualification in injection therapy will be required once in an 8a role and you will be supported to achieve this.

You will mainly be based in the Southampton area, although will be required to travel to Portsmouth on a regular basis. Working days will need to be aligned with our current Hand Specialists whilst competencies are undertaken to ensure required level of support is in place.

Main duties of the job

To work as an integral part of the Specialist Musculoskeletal (MSK) Service, to develop comprehensive, expert assessment, triage and management of patients with MSK hand and elbow conditions and work towards autonomous practitioner.

To develop from a Band 7 to a Band 8a Musculoskeletal Clinical Specialist Hand and Elbow Specialist.

Under supervision and working to become independent with the order of further investigations as required and to refer patients on to other relevant clinical teams when required.

Support the MSK service with effective triaging of referrals into the MSK Service.

To liaise with other team members to identify client-centred needs and ensure progress through the appropriate care pathway.

To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support and facilitate more junior staff to do likewise, using evidence-based practices and evaluate outcomes.

Keep up to date with clinical developments, current research and implementing changes in clinical practice.

To guide the development of colleagues of all grades through teaching, supervision and advice and through in-service develop knowledge so you can act as a source of specialist advice on clinical management of selected conditions.

To work from key hub sites and local community clinics managing patients who have self-referred and those referred by GPs

About us

We have been working with other local NHS Trusts to create a new organisation, bringing together all community, mental health and learning disability services from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Subject to approvals, the aim is for the new Trust to be formed by the end of 2024.

Project Fusion is the name for the programme to create the new combined NHS Foundation Trust. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be bringing the services into a single organisation will result in more consistent care, more equitable access to services irrespective of postcode, and a more sustainable workforce and services. The new organisation will operate locally to ensure services can best meet the needs of different communities.

The new Trust will be comprised of all the services currently provided by Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, the community, mental health and learning disability services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust and child and adolescent mental health services delivered in parts of Hampshire by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Colleagues will transfer to the new organisation under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) -- known as TUPE on the day the trust is formed. TUPE is a legal process to ensure you transfer out of one organisation and into another, maintaining the terms and conditions of your employment.
