Norwich, United Kingdom John Innes Centre Full time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to join the Seung Group at the John Innes Centre, working on cutting-edge science in the field of Biochemistry and Metabolism.

About the Seung Group

Dr Seung’s research group aims to develop a full molecular understanding of how plants make starch. The group’s current research has several sub-objectives:

• Understand the mechanism of starch granule initiation
• Identify genes that underpin diversity in starch granule morphology and composition
• Develop novel approaches to improve the quality of starch crops.

The team maintains a vibrant and stimulating research atmosphere – currently consisting of two postdoctoral scientists, five postgraduate students and a research assistant. We regularly host projects for undergraduate students.

More information about the group can be found .

The role

We are looking for a Research Assistant to work on a BBSRC-funded project, which aims to elucidate the mechanisms governing the spatial and temporal pattern of starch granule initiation in developing wheat grains. The successful candidate will focus on the genetic dissection of this process, which includes characterising wheat mutants that are deficient in novel components of granule initiation. They will also study genetic interactions through the analysis of multiple mutants generated through crosses. Techniques involve analysis of plant growth, grain yield, biochemical assays for starch content, enzyme assays, analysis of granule size, and microscopy to examine granule morphology. They will work closely with the postdoctoral scientist leading this project, as well as our collaborators.

The ideal candidate

Applicants must have prior experience in the analysis of starch in wheat grains, in addition to experience in growing and working with wheat plants. You will have at least a BSc or equivalent in biology or related discipline. Candidates will also have in-depth knowledge of plant biology (with focus on cereal biochemistry), and demonstrated ability to generate high quality data for publications and grants. Given the highly collaborative nature of this project, it is essential that you value teamwork.
