Job summary

An exciting leadership opportunity has arisen at St Kentigern Hospice. We are seeking to appoint a Matron who will be a member of the Executive Management Team, contributing to both the strategic direction of the hospice and the day to day Clinical Management of the inpatient unit, outpatient services (Wellbeing Hwb) and the Family Support Team.

The role requires an inspirational, innovative and visible leader, with the vision to develop services and meet our strategic aims set out in our strategic 5 year plan (2023-2028).

Experience in a leadership role is essential as the role requires management of a full multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary/Job Purpose:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

LEADERSHIP AND PARTNERSHIPS

Provide dynamic, inspirational and visible leadership for clinical services, ensuring the needs of patients and their families are at the heart of everything we do.

Empower and encourage staff to develop as autonomous practitioners.

Support the implementation of the hospices strategic objectives, in collaboration with the EMT and Senior Management Team (SMT), colleagues and Trustees.

Develop and maintain strong and effective links with local, regional and national colleagues within hospices and partnerships with the wider health and social care systems and higher education partners.

Act as Registered Manager, providing assurance to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Trustees on the quality of care provided and compliance with legislative requirements.

Provide inspirational compassionate leadership.

Ensure cost-effective and appropriate use of resources and be responsible for department budget monitoring.

CLINICAL

Effectively develop, maintain, lead and manage all clinical services throughout the hospice to ensure the delivery of exceptional patient/family focused care. Inspire and empower the multidisciplinary team to deliver the highest standard of care for patients and their families. Maintain a culture of excellence, leading by example. Lead with the development, review and implementation of clinical policies and procedures to ensure patient and staff safety. Empower clinical leads of departments to develop and implement quality improvement methodology to drive excellence in patient care. Ensure the workforce is relevant and appropriate in relation to skill mix and capacity to meet the needs of the patients and families and the wider organisation. Encourage, develop and support the continuous professional development of the multidisciplinary clinical team. Monitor, coach and manage staff performance, addressing any issues in accordance with hospice policy and procedures, best practice and/or professional codes of practice. Provide visibility within clinical areas and be accessible to patients, families, staff and volunteers.

GOVERNANCE AND QUALITY

As Registered Manager, lead on all matters relating to HIW inspections, compliance and submission of any reporting requirements. Contribute to or lead on strategic development and commissioning of new services or initiatives. Contribute to the strategic direction of the hospice and its services for patients and families. Maintain compliance and contribute to relevant elements of the governance framework including risk management, clinical governance, quality and audit Attend bi-monthly quality and safety committee meetings.

MANAGEMENT

Manage all clinical services, ensuring consistently high standards of service. Produce and submit a bi-monthly clinical services report. Develop and agree annual budgets for clinical services, working in collaboration with finance colleagues and heads of departments. Oversee, with the CEO, relevant external service level agreements. Provide accurate information, statistics and outcomes to the Board of Trustees, sub committees and other partners as required. Work alongside the EMT to manage HR issues within clinical services. Establish partnerships working with relevant external organisations.

AUDIT AND RESEARCH

Disseminate to the clinical teams, current best practice knowledge through research and audit. Participate and if appropriate lead on audit and research projects.

EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Support the development and implementation of induction programmes, and education and training for staff, creating a culture of learning and development.

Maintain external links with educational providers.
