Job summary

Practice Development Nurse / ODP - Theatres Band 6 ( hours a week)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Practice Development Team within Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust. Working across three sites - Gloucester, Cheltenham and Cirencester.

Working with the vision "best care for everyone", the post holder will be based within the peri-operative environment across site. The post holder will be an enthusiastic, proactive role model who leads in the clinical environment on the provision of clinical skills and education. In addition to facilitating support and education for students and colleagues, the successful candidate will be passionate about safe, effective patient care; in accordance with NMC/HCPC standards and Trust policies and procedures.

You will have at least three years experience within the peri-operative environment and be a strong team player with extensive knowledge of scrub and/or anaesthetic practice. Along with your colleagues in the Theatre Practice Development team you will be required to identify learning needs and develop targeted teaching programmes and learning activities to facilitate safe clinical environments. The role promises to be both interesting and challenging

Main duties of the job

Provide visible, accessible support and education to staff acting as an expert role model to ensure excellence and effectiveness of all clinical/surgical practice

To create and support a safe learning environment which facilitates innovative approaches to patient care and nursing practice in order to improve the quality of care given

To coordinate multidisciplinary learning in the clinical environment to ensure the Trusts safety agenda is promoted and embedded in induction and training and ensure statutory and mandatory training is undertakenTo support student nurses, student ODPs, apprentice student ODPs, T-level students, level three apprentices, new starters and existing colleagues across all theatre departments in the development and maintenance of clinical skills and knowledge

Work collaboratively with the Theatre Quality Improvement and Project Lead and Risk Lead to ensure continuous quality improvement and safe working practice

Represent theatres during recruitment and selection activities promoting theatres as an excellent place to work

Successful applicants will be required to work across site with a variety of specialties and teams.

You will be required to keep accurate and timely training records of all activities undertaken.

Promote reflective practice, clinical supervision and personal action for quality improvement

The Practice Development Team within theatres is a group of resourceful, dynamic and experienced nurses and ODPs who aim to support the individual, department and Trust in achieving the best care for everyone.

Working in the Practice Development Team in theatres will give you the knowledge that every aspect of our work genuinely makes a difference in supporting our colleagues and patients, ensuring colleagues flourish in order to deliver outstanding care to patients within a safe peri-operative environment.

Job responsibilities

To promote high quality clinical care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council/Health Care Professions Council and Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust

Provide visible, accessible leadership to staff and act as an expert role model to ensure the excellence and effectiveness of all clinical/surgical practice

To inspire, motivate and empower others to ensure highly specialised clinical competence and standards are developed and maintainedAble to demonstrate expert competence in a surgical environment with highly developed specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.

Demonstrate the ability to share clinical knowledge and skills with learners and colleagues in both the classroom and the clinical settingEnsure safe care is provided within a challenging and changing clinical environment, supporting staff using equipment and resourcesAct as cascade trainer and Moving and Enabling Link resourceDevelop and deliver Theatre Competency study day and other theatre specific training sessions, receive feedback and monitor their effectivenessTo be able to plan student placements and support safe learning environments

To be able to lead and deputise when required, in the absence of the band 7 Practice Development Lead- Theatres

Evidence of teaching and assessing experience and an appropriate qualification, with a commitment to the ongoing development of all non medical colleagues

Experience of motivating staff and team building, with experience of appraisal, career conversations and performance management of colleagues

Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed best practiceParticipate in audit and research

Understanding and experience of implementing research based practiceSupport the clinical area, ensuring protocols, policies and procedures are adhered to and provide a service to the agreed standard which meets organizational and national targets

This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding mattersEnsure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and ensure the professionalism of its staff is portrayed

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Relevant degree or equivalent Registered Nurse/ODP with the NMC/HCPC having substantial post registration experience Evidence of professional development through the maintenance of ongoing study

Desirable

Surgical first assistant or other relevant advanced training

Experience

Perioperative experience working in anaesthetics or scrub Ability to work flexibly and dynamically Evidence of supervising, assessing or mentoring learners in practice

Evidence of additional responsibilities such as a champion or link role Evidence of the ability to lead change and develop, implement, monitor and evaluate policies, protocols, guidelines relevant to the perioperative environment
