Job summary
In partnership with the multidisciplinary team, work as an autonomous Clinical Nurse Specialist or Medical Retina Ophthalmic Practitioner utilising specialist knowledge and advanced clinical skills to undertake a holistic assessment of ophthalmic patients. The post holder will interpret investigations to arrive at a diagnosis and the implementation of a management plan. Work cross sites at the Trust in the delivery of Medical Retina care.
The post holder is accountable for their safe, effective clinical practice and working as part of the medical retina team, supporting team performance, ensuring efficient and effective use of physical and human resources.
The post holder will be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards and professional practice as set by Trust Policies/Procedures, the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour / General Optical Council / British and Irish Orthoptic Society / Health and Care Professions Council and relevant professional guidelines.
The post holder has responsibility for continuing professional development and the ongoing audit and development of the role in relation to the needs of the service and will promote excellence in ophthalmic practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, acting as a resource and role model to provide support, advice and supervision to new colleagues and junior staff including learners. Acting as resource for education and development within the service.
Main duties of the job
Provide highly visible clinical presence demonstrating expert knowledge, high standards of clinical practice and provide support/ advice when necessary to patients, staff, families, and carers. Be accessible to patients, staff, families, and their carers' providing for advice and support
Undertake administration of intravitreal treatment within the Ophthalmology department across the Trust
Accountable for episodes of care for patients: - assessment, diagnosis and decision to discharge or referral as required; ensuring patients receive the highest standard of clinical care
Undertake virtual and face to face clinics in the management of patients receiving intravitreal treatment
Contribute to practice development through audit and development of clinical guidelines/ procedure and policy. Support analysis of data relating to patient outcomes and experience supporting quality and safety assurance processes to inform service development / improvement.
Support the professional development of others through supervision, assessment and coaching and role modelling.
Actively participate in and lead on aspects of service and departmental projects, audits, quality initiatives and statutory accreditation processes. Including the setting, monitoring of clinical standards and treatment on a regular basis. Contribute or undertake a lead role in updating of protocols, guidelines, policy, and procedures.

*Significant experience working at band 6 level or equivalent as an Optometrist/Orthoptist/Registered Nurse within a background in treating patients with eye-related disorders and conditions *Evidence of the ability to revalidate as required by (GOC, NMC, HCPC) *Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence *Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality *Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting *Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment
Desirable
*Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level in ophthalmology with eye related disorders associated with the post applied for *Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator *Experience in service development *Experience of patient service user advocacy role
