Software Engineer

Brackley, UK

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, based out of Brackley, UK, brings together over 1,300 dedicated and determined people that design, develop, manufacture, and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner, George Russell.

We apply the same vision, skills and vitality to projects for external clients, through our Applied Science Division. Customers for our aerodynamic consultancy have included winter sports, cycling, automotive and aerospace sectors, and a range of motorsport series. We are also working closely with INEOS Britannia on their entrant for sailing’s America’s Cup, bringing together our shared enthusiasm for performance engineering and sporting endeavour.

We have an exciting opening for a Software Engineer to join our Aerodynamics Department to develop the tools used as a key part of maximising vehicle performance.

We are looking for curious engineers who are passionate about what they do to join our Team and support our activities. A prior interest in sailing or motorsport is not required: we are more interested in your ability to apply your skills and understanding to practical engineering challenges.

Key accountabilities / duties include:

You will work collaboratively as part of a small team, applying your thoughtful and curious nature to a range of stimulating challenges, creating innovative engineering solutions to real problems. As a valued member of our Aerodynamics Department, your ideas and skills will make a tangible contribution to the Team.

Your responsibilities will cover developing and supporting software that is used to analyse and manipulate data from different sources.

Key responsibilities include to:

Advance the software, methodologies and processes used to analyse data

Improve the efficiency of existing software, introduce new software tools, implement innovative methodologies and processes

Deliver high-quality work on-time

Log and prioritise work items such as epics, feature requests, and bug fixes

Communicate progress and proactively coordinate the completion of work items

Provide assistance to software contributions from the broader group

Support users, for example resolving issues – this may include assistance outside of core hours and over weekends

Supported and mentored by knowledgeable engineers, you will see your skills develop. Immersed in a culture of empowerment and fresh thinking, you will take the next step in a successful career.

This role is office-based, at our Brackley campus.

Candidate profile:

You have an open and curious mind, a creative approach to software engineering problems and are keen to develop yourself further in a demanding role.

Capable of working on your own and applying your reflective nature to understand a problem, your open and honest communication style means you also relish collaborating in a team setting. With a broad overview of your subject, you enjoy discussing technical concepts and finding solutions to problems by applying your interpretive skills, attention to detail and dependable judgment.

Passionate about fulfilling your potential, you are excited about constantly learning while fostering the understanding of others.

Essential skills and experience:

Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline with a significant software development content

Experience of writing, developing, or modifying engineering software

Experience of working with, and thorough knowledge of, .NET, for example: Desktop applications written in Windows Presentation Foundation using ReactiveUI and/or ASP.NETCore web services

Good understanding of Git

Experience of Machine Learning Operations (MLOps)

Practical understanding of computational statistics

Good communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to users

Experience of working on multiple projects in parallel, delivering high-quality work on time

Not essential, but useful:

Experience developing and supporting data-analysis software

Knowledge of Python, MATLAB or web-based technologies

Experience with containerisation technologies, specifically Docker

Experience with the Azure ecosystem, in particular Azure DevOps

What do we offer:

At the heart of our performance are our people. Every member of our team has a voice and plays their part in contributing to our successes on and off the racetrack.

We take pride in creating an innovative, collaborative and high-performance culture where all of our team members are respected, empowered and valued.
