Thesuccessful candidates will work within the Clinical Decisions Unit (SurgicalSame day Emergency Care). The unit runsa 7 day service 0730-2000, including weekends and all bank holidays. The unitassesses General Surgical emergency patients as well as those of the SurgicalSpecialties, such as Breast and ENT. The Clinical Decisions Unit is anemergency Triage area for those requiring treatment but not always hospitaladmission.

The candidate will assistthe Nursing and Medical team to ensure safe and effective patient care and workwithin the set protocols of SDEC.

The Clinical Decisions Unitis a small team of approximately 14 staff members and we all have a very goodsense of teamwork and togetherness. Thestaff all have a variety of experience and will always be willing to offer supportand assistance where needed.

Main duties of the job

Thisis an exciting opportunity to contribute to our service development. The successful candidate will be expected toprovide high quality care without direct supervision working with all membersof the multidisciplinary team. They will be responsible for carrying out a rangeof duties and responsibilities as indicated within the Person Specification anda Competency Framework governing aspects of care appropriate at Band 3.

Experience in GeneralSurgery is essential, for this role.

You will be able to workeffectively within a team environment; good communication skills must be evident.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Thepost holder will provide care to patients in collaboration with a registered NursePractitioner. The Healthcare Assistant will provide specific direct care and becompetent to work across professional disciplines and refer patients forsupport and advice to other agencies as required. To work effectively as amember of the team, contributing to the delivery of a high standard of care.

Performing additionalskills appropriate to the unit, this will include venepucture, complex woundcare, cannulation and completing theatre checklists.

Patient assessment andreview

Early recognition ofdeterioration in patients condition

Completion of nursing records on EPR

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent relevant experience. Care Certificate or willingness to complete within first 6 months of commencement in post. GCSE equivalent in English and Mathematics.

Desirable

Short courses relevant to undertake patient and clinical care duties.

Experience

Essential

Computer skills. Ability to learn new skills.

Desirable

Previous experience in caring for others.

Special Requirements

Essential

Self-motivated and able to motivate others. Excellent communication & interpersonal skills. Reflective practitioner. Ability to work in a busy and varied work environment and respond to change.

Desirable

Be able to offer pastoral care to mentors and students when providing feedback on performance.
