An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Theatre Nurse / ODP for the role of Paediatric Theatre Practitioner within Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital (RACH) Theatres in Brighton. This is a Band 5 post, and is available as a permanent full time post, although we will consider a part time application. 

We also welcome students who are due to qualify this year to apply.

We are a welcoming and supportive theatre team who can offer training and development with a clear progression pathway for the right person.

We undertake all sub specialties within Paediatric surgery including; General surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Max-Fax, Dental, Opthalmics, Gynae, Neonatal, Endoscopy, Medical, Oncology, and out of department services including MRI and CT.

We are looking for a motivated person to join our Paediatric Theatre team at the RACH in Brighton. Theatre experience (particularly paediatric) is desirable, but training and support will be provided for the right candidate.

We would encourage either an experienced theatre practitioner in a scrub/anaesthetic/recovery role, or a soon to be qualified Nurse/ODP to join the team.

Main duties of the job

We are a relatively small theatre team, who place an emphasis on a strong work ethic and excellent team work, allowing us to maintain the highest possible standards of patient focused care.

We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic Nurse or ODP who would like to develop or further their paediatric theatre experience.

Main duties: 

To promote a safe clean clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff. To maintain the patients respect, dignity and privacy and to act with kindness and courtesy to all members of the public. To understand and adhere to the NMC/HCPC code of conduct. To take personal responsibility for maintaining professional registration with the NMC/HCPC. To take personal responsibility for identifying own training needs for mandatory and statutory training and discussing these with the line manager ensuring that training sessions are attended. To take personal responsibility for ensuring that personal objectives are agreed with the line manager and that annual appraisal takes place. To actively contribute to the teaching and learning of others. To be aware of and take appropriate action in the event of cardiac arrest, fire and major incident. To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of teams in which you work. To maintain accurate records of care, treatment and observations. To participate in the control, storage and competent administration of medications according to Trust policies and NMC guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In conjunction with other clinical staff, participates in the setting, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care for patients.

Using the specialist peri-operative care plan the post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care within sphere of responsibility.

To provide specialist, technical and clinical information to patients and relevant colleagues in the peri-operative setting.

Demonstrate effective management, interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills to deal with complex and conflicting clinical situations.

Demonstrate an awareness of changing trends in peri-operative practice and possess the skills required to work in these areas.

Demonstrate specialist knowledge that is underpinned by theoretical knowledge and/or relevant practical experience.

Demonstrate the ability to manage an unpredictable workload and deal with occasional traumatic and emotional situations.

Demonstrate a high standard of skills in one or more of the following areas; anaesthetic, recovery, scrub and circulating skills. Or a willingness and aptitude to achieve this

Ensure the multidisciplinary team maintain documentation and utilise information within the specialist peri-operative care pathway

Understand and apply current manual handling policies and procedures specific to patients and equipment.

Adhere to departmental guidelines regarding infection control and participate in maintaining a clean environment.

Sustain and update knowledge of maintenance and checking procedures of specialist equipment used within the department.
