Job summary

King's College Hospital is split between 2 sites - Denmark Hill in London and Princess Royal in Farnborough Kent. This role will be based at Princess Royal University Hospital, but there may be a requirement to work and undertake training at the Denmark Hill site on occasion.

The post holder will be involved in the provision of lung function, sleep investigation and treatment services for Princess Royal University Hospital

The successful candidate will provide a full range of both routine and specialised lung function tests and assist in the further development of the sleep investigation service and treatment service, including the initiation and follow up of CPAP and BiPAP treatment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Respiratory Physiologist, with excellent communication and organisational skills. They should be self-motivated, demonstrate a high level of technical skills and be willing to learn new tests and techniques.

Clinical Physiology BSc, or equivalent professional qualification is required, and ARTP Part 1 and 2 are desirable alongside significant post qualification experience. The post holder should be registered with the RCCP or AHCS or actively seeking registration.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be involved in the provision of adult lung function, sleep investigation and treatment services for King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Paediatric testing may be required at the Denmark Hill site.

They will provide a full range of both routine and specialised lung function tests and assist in the development of a sleep investigation service.

The initiation and follow up of CPAP and BiPAP treatment for adult patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and responsibility for administration and clinical documentation of this service.

To have, in rotation, responsibility for one of the day to day running of either the lung function, sleep investigation or treatment of sleep disordered breathing services.

Job responsibilities

Lung function

Working independently to perform lung function tests that include spirometry, transfer factor, reversibility, skin prick testing, spot check oximetry, helium dilution, body plethysmography, capillary blood gas sampling, 6 minute walk tests, bronchial challenge testing, assessments of respiratory muscle strength, hyperventilation screening. Ensuring that all tests performed adhere to departmental Standard Operating Procedures in accordance with national guidelines. Responsibility for the technical quality and accuracy of all tests performed Performing and recording results of calibration and quality control of equipment and taking corrective action where required. Responsibility for routine maintenance of all laboratory equipment. Liaising with manufacturing companies and service staff when faults cannot be corrected locally Checking the technical quality of results produced by others and providing technical and clinical interpretation of test results

Sleep Investigation

Independently performing analysing, technically and clinically reporting overnight oximetry sleep studies Independently performing set ups of multi-channel respiratory sleep studies, including the scoring and clinical interpretation of result. Person Specification
