Job overview

Lead our approach to excellence in preventing and reducing perinatal mortality and mortality within maternity and referral to other external organizations.
Leading the perinatal mortality and morbidity service to provide specialist, expert advice, and education to support our clinical teams to deliver safe and compassionate care.
Draw themes and trends from PMRT report, EMBRACE and MNSI findings and develop action plans. Conduct gap analysis with Quality and Governance team and benchmark our service against national reports and draw themes and trends.
Lead on implementation of actions and recommendations from PMRT report, EMBRACE and MNSI findings, working in partnership with our Associate Directors of Midwifery and Director of Midwifery to sustain and embed the improvements.
Ensure the actions taken and improvements are effective by conducting regular audits.

Main duties of the job

Ensure Bereaved families are actively involved and encouraged to participate in investigation relating to the loss of their baby (PMRT information leaflets).
Work collaboratively with Bereavement specialist midwives with the on-going development of quality monitoring systems related to PMRT.
To provide training and support to the wider multidisciplinary team on all aspects of perinatal mortality and morbidity.
Support and inform the Associate Directors of Midwifery, Lead Obstetric Consultant for Quality and Safety and Quality and Safety Lead with robust data regarding Perinatal loss. 

Support the bereavement team (Doctors and midwives) to provide and develop a service primarily based on learning from PMRT.

Act independently, organise own time and that of staff within the team

Play a lead role in the achievement and maintenance of high standards of service, using the tools of clinical audit, PMRT reports, and parents feedback surveys to their full effect. Delegate where appropriate.

Ensure the Bereavement Service provides evidence of effective care e.g. collating and disseminating PMRT reports, MBBRACE, stillbirth audits results and outcomes.
Working collaboratively with the bereavement midwives by developing the service, keeping abreast of external developments in bereavement care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Lead PMRT and MBBRACE, trust wide reporting.

Liaise and coordinate with specialist bereavement midwives, including on case reviews.
Monitoring and controlling of care standards, seeking opportunities for joint working, and ensuring all actions are implemented from audit findings and PMRT reports.
Act independently, organise own time and that of staff within the team.

Clinical Risk and Governance management
Lead the translation of National guidelines and directives that relate to Perinatal loss into local policy and clinical strategy development e.g. NICE
Lead the development of staff training programs and local induction packages that support the implementation of the PMRT feedback and effective practice.
Disseminate and promote PMRT reports, MBBRRACE and Each baby counts findings at relevant boards, committees and in day-to- day clinical service operations.
Identify gaps and risks in the service through PMRT reports and MBBRRACE findings and devise strategies to counter these and escalate when required.
To ensure that the management of all information relating to Perinatal loss meets the needs of NMUH, Trust Board, Corporate and Clinical Governance teams.
Manage, monitor, and update the quality of the bereavement information distributed across NMUH covering - pregnancy loss, maternity, pediatric and adult care.
Develop service specifications to ensure that bereavement advice is provided to those who want it in an appropriate and timely manner e.g. ensuring bereaved relatives are offered the choice of receiving further bereavement information 6 weeks following the death.
Review and evaluate specialist care delivery and provide expert testimony for Bereavement Care related investigations associated with Coroners inquests, legal and safeguarding inquiries.

Planning and Organisational Skills
Coordinating internal and external PMRT reviews.
Support the planning of strategies which impact across the service.

Education and Professional Development
Proactively impart specialist knowledge and shares expertise with patients, nurses, midwives, managers, medical teams, and professionals allied to medicine.

Demonstrate and share expert knowledge and skills via participation in formal and informal teaching programs for all professions allied to medicine and at site/ward-based point of care teaching sessions.


Support the development of NMUH staff training programs and deliver local induction packages that support the implementation of the PMRT action plans and recommendations, 
Work closely with Education team and Quality and Governance team to develop PMRT, MBBRRACE content for multi professional training, for all disciplines, including junior doctors, to support implementation of actions plans and recommendations from the tools.

Support the development of innovative methods for delivering teaching and training such as e -learning packages.
Act as a role model in demonstrating own development of personal and professional practice through reflective learning and critical thinking.

Promote and support clinical excellence and transformation via engagement in organisational developments and dissemination of national and local agendas that support the safety and effective delivery of high-quality care.
Support and supervise the professional development of other team members.
Contribute to the planning, development, and evaluation of pre and post registration curricula.
Contribute and engage in professional development programs and of external organisations and professional network groups.
