Main duties of the job

The Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist for Medicine and Surgery - Team Lead is responsible for working closely with the Head of Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapy Professional lead, other Occupational Therapy Team Leads and relevant clinical colleagues / managers to ensure: 

the provision of leadership, supervision; professional consultation, guidance and advice to the Medicine and Surgery Occupational Therapy Team  the planning, delivery, evaluation and review of an effective Occupational Therapy service by the Team to Medical and Surgical patients at the Royal Sussex County Hospital  the professional representation of Occupational Therapy in the planning, development and evaluation of clinical services within our acute medicine service, holding responsibility for defined projects in agreement with the Head of Occupational Therapy, Therapies Site Lead and Professional Lead  the management of a caseload of clients with complex needs, using evidence-based and client-centred principles to assess, plan implement and evaluate interventions  the professional representation of the Occupational Therapy Service as a whole, to include deputising for the Occupational Therapy Professional Lead in liaison with other Team Leads in their absence

Essential criteria

Diploma in Occupational Therapy or BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy or overseas equivalent Evidence of relevant post graduate clinical courses/ CPD and reflective practice Experience of supervising less experienced staff and students Experience of working in a range of clinical specialties e.g.: cardiac; respiratory medicine; palliative care/end of life; dementia care, frailty, orthopaedics. Experience in managing a team.

Desirable criteria

Evidence of post graduate management courses or training Experience in handling complaints and disputes Recruitment and Selection training and experience

Skills

Essential criteria

High level of clinical skill in speciality area and ability to teach those skills (to own and other professions) Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in a crisis Ability to prioritise clinical and non clinical work Teamwork and co-operation. Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable criteria

Relevant experience, including work at Band 7 level within the speciality Experience in strategic planning and formulating business plans
