Job Description

An OFSTED rated ‘good’ school in Greenwich are seeking a lead Science Technician to join them from September. The post holder has personal responsibility for an area of the technician service with a particular, but not exclusive emphasis to A level Physics and Integrated Science to Years 7 to 11. 

Science Technician - The Role

•  To coordinate the use of practical resources and provide assistance and advice in the practical needs of the science curriculum, including liaising with teaching staff.

To ensure and promote the maintenance of a healthy &; safe working environment through:

•  Actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring and review of both health &; safety procedures and information resources.
•  Keeping up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development.
•  The provision of technical advice and support on health &; safety issues to teaching and technical staff.
•  The safe treatment &; disposal of used materials including hazardous substances and responding to actual or potential hazards.
•  The healthy &; safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials.
•  To be responsible for the deployment of four technicians ensuring that essential performance standards are achieved.
•  To undertake performance management reviews for the technicians and planning of appropriate training.
•  To co-ordinate regular technician meetings and to record minutes.
•  To contribute to the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and offer professional guidance to support students and teachers on the practical aspects of the curriculum. 
•  To work closely with the Curriculum Leader in Science regarding changes to the National Curriculum.
•  To be responsible for checking stock, ordering, and keeping stock records and maintaining relevant resources.
•  To ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning and maintenance, calibration testing and repairing of equipment are carried out to required standard.
•  Assist teaching A level physics experiments as required.
•  Support training of other technicians in physics skills e.g. data-logging experiments.
•  Supervise A level PAG experiments in physics when required afterschool.
•  Assist with science department trips (e.g. evening astronomy visits).
•  Review, update, and maintain H+S in physics. New CLEAPPS directives etc.
•  Review KS3 and KS4 physics SOW to incorporate wider range of practical work and support less experienced non-specialist teachers delivering them.
•  Design and test new KS3/KS4 experiments when required.
•  Maintain databases for A level students competing PAG experiments.
•  Deliver ‘exciting’ physics demos for teachers when required and be involved in class practical's.

Science Technician - Requirements:

•  A good standard of education.
•  A commitment to your own continued professional development and learning.
•  A commitment to participation.
•  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
•  Of working in a school or similar environment.
•  Experience of using a range of ICT and new technologies.
•  The ability to lead a team of 4 technicians.
•  Ability to work under pressure and deal with conflicting demands.
•  Awareness of health &; safety regulations in relation to science laboratories and chemical storage and protective clothing.
•  Awareness of National Curriculum relating to science.  
•  Effective behaviour management skills.
•  A commitment to safeguarding for all young people.
•  Proven track record as science technician.
•  Have a first aid qualification and understand the treatments for chemical injuries that may occur in science experiments.

The school is not expecting you to possess all the above but knowledge and enthusiasm to develop professionally is essential.
