We are currently recruiting for Class 2 drivers to work for the waste recycling team for our client based in Cardiff

Hours 6.00am - 3.45pm Tuesday - Friday


Job Role
The Recycling LGV Driver/Operative will undertake a variety of duties connected with driving the refuse collection vehicle and overseeing the Recycling Operatives and undertaking the collection of recyclable materials from a variety of premises, for delivery to an appropriate location. Duties will be undertaken within a specified area or areas as appropriate and incorporate the use of the full range of refuse collection containers, associated collection equipment, information and telecommunications technology and vehicles.
The Recycling LGV Driver/Operative will also be required to undertake other LGV driving duties such as refuse collection, recycling, street cleansing and associated functions when not required in recycling operations.

Main Responsibilities
To drive and be responsible for any allocated vehicle and any authorised passengers. Also to ensure that the vehicle is not overloaded and to safely manoeuvre the vehicle on the daily route.

To carry out refuse collection and recycling duties, with due regard to property and with minimum disturbance to members of the public, hence bins and other items should be emptied and returned to their proper location undamaged and with lids closed. Appropriate mechanical aids should be used and all spillages should be cleared up and gates closed after collection has been completed.

To empty all types of receptacle and lift all loose waste, as required, ensuring the safe collection and disposal of waste. To undertake any inspection process required to ensure that materials presented for recycling are not contaminated by non-appropriate materials. This will include both pre and post emptying of the receptacle.

To adhere to instructions given regarding the use of landfill or other disposal sites and transfer stations.

To adhere to appropriate driving guidelines - driver daily checks, accident procedure and drivers' procedures, and other relevant duties. Adherence to health and safety at work legislation and appropriate codes of practice. This also covers the wearing of appropriate protective and reflective clothing, safety footwear and other PPE, the safe lifting of heavy objects and ensuring the safety of the public and other council staff where appropriate.

To liaise with the Assistant Manager (Priority Waste and Transport) concerning the daily route and in so far as is possible ensure that it is followed. To ensure that, where practicable, all refuse and litter on the route is collected.

To operate any collection systems as required (for example, bin and box) including bin lifts containing bin weighing equipment, bins with data chips, vehicle safety equipment (including vehicle immobilisation, locking and alarm systems and bin-lift immobilisation systems), and to report to management any defects to such equipment in a timely manner and to assist new employees in the use of such equipment.

To take part in all required training activities including instructing other operatives in the use of plant and vehicle immobilization and safety equipment and recycling operations.

To supervise the daily work of the operatives ensuring the daily route is followed and all relevant operational instructions are followed.

To complete all daily record sheets - mileage, fuel, defects, and other documents, and return them to the Assistant Manager (Priority Waste and Transport) daily.

Essential criteria
a) have a full, current 'C' category driving license which enables them to drive in Northern Ireland (a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) will be provided for the purposes of fulfilling the duties of this post);
b) have a full, current Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification; and
* be able to demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples on the application form, at least one year's relevant work experience of each of the following:
c) driving a LGV in a commercial or public sector environment; and
d) dealing directly with members of the public, in person.
