Oxford, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

We are seeking

to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the lab of Dr Georgia Isom, based in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford. The project will investigate the molecular mechanisms by which Gram-negative bacteria build and maintain their cell envelopes, contributing to antimicrobial resistance. The post-holder will be responsible for managing own academic research and administrative activities. You will assess hypotheses, troubleshoot or adjust experimental works when needed, and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources. The project will involve constructing gene knockouts in E. coli and identifying novel phenotypes (e.g. growth sensitivity assays, changes in membrane composition). Biochemical approaches will also be used, including protein-substrate binding assays, mass spectrometry (with collaborators) and in vivo crosslinking. You will work alongside other lab members who are determining the structures of membrane proteins. The post-holder should hold, or be close to completion of, PhD/DPhil in biochemistry, microbiology or a relevant subject. You should have prior experience in protein biochemistry and bacteriology and be enthusiastic about investigating the function of bacterial membrane proteins. The post-holder should have excellent communication skills, ability to work independently as well as part of a team as well as contribute ideas for new research projects.
