The post holder will join our dynamic respiratory department for a consultant with a special interest in Sleep and Ventilatory failure and weaning from mechanical ventilation. The post holder will join an existing team of three full time consultants and one part time consultant. The post includes 10 PA of activity.

Dr Andrea Benjamin, Dr Prina Ruparelia (service lead), Dr David Simcock and Dr Nanak Singh provide inpatient and outpatient care at St Bartholomew's Hospital, facilitating clinical pathways, reporting sleep studies. We plan to develop a weaning service with our critical care colleagues together with a multidisciplinary team of respiratory/sleep physiologists, physiotherapists and engineering specialists.

The postholder will care for Respiratory inpatient and day cases at St Bartholomew's Hospital, joining a weekly consultant rota with inpatient ward rounds and on-call. The postholder will also provide advice regarding patients who require ventilatory support within the North East London catchment area.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient acute and specialist Respiratory Medicine service at Barts Health NHS Trust.

To work closely with colleagues in primary and secondary care, intensive care medicine and radiology to provide seamless care for patients with complex breathing problems that require respiratory support including long term ventilation via tracheostomy.

To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients.

To develop community partnerships and a networked ventilation service across north east London.

To have regard at all times for the clinical and quality standards.

To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies, and to work collaboratively across East London as required.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care. Leadership, development and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director of Respiratory Medicine, the General Manager and the Managing Director. Development of his/her own interests and specialisms within the specialty, particularly in weaning from mechanical ventilation, and including active participation in research programmes. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training including the approval and monitoring of on calls rotas and locum appointments. Whilst this role does not have any acute respiratory sessions flexibility will be expected to ensure the safe delivery of acute respiratory care.

GMC registration MBBS or equivalent MRCP or equivalent CCT in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine, G(I)M, (or within 6 months of eligibility at the time of interview) or be on the Specialist Register

Relevant Experience
Essential

Evidence of broad respiratory and general medicine training Sleep and ventilation experience in a recognised specialist centre.

At least one year's experience at senior level in a specialist home ventilation service Experience in respiratory weaning
