Responsible Sourcing Manager

This is an exciting role managerial role working within the Sustainability Team with a focus on ensuring that Next meets all its environmental and responsible sourcing goals. The role will have a focus on using the most responsible and traceable raw materials and manage the climate related risks associated with the products we sell with responsibility for specific materials (depending on experience), including Timber, Leather and hard goods.

About the role

Responsible Sourcing Programme 

Lead work directly with the Product teams to implement the Responsible Sourcing Strategy across selected categories such as homeware, Animal welfare, denim, footwear (topic areas dependent on experience of successful candidate). Develop detailed roadmaps and delivery plans across raw materials, certification, and improved processes (such as dye processes). Lead and support wider team on development of responsible sourcing roadmap and programme of activity, ensuring NEXT is continually developing and moving toward its targets, including our 2025 Responsible Sourcing targets and beyond.  Lead specific raw material workstreams, developing Next’s approach including policy, implementation plan and monitoring.  Collaborate with other business areas such as Licenced, Third party brands and joint ventures to train & engage teams, develop roadmaps and provide expert guidance as required. Lead development of training programme alongside L&D team for all Responsible Sourcing Topics Engage Internal stakeholders across responsible sourcing topics including Product Directors, Buying teams, Finance and Legal; develop strong working relationships and collaborations. Work closely with the wider team to develop supply chain strategy to reduce carbon emissions, supporting suppliers to implement improvements and collaborating across industry where relevant - identifying actions and supporting suppliers. Opportunity to take responsibility for additional product categories. Join external forums as required to gain knowledge and collaborate eg. Textiles 2030, BRC. Developing manuals, training and engagement for internal stakeholders and suppliers on relevant topic areas.

Product Legislation

Ensure NEXT is in compliance with all UK, European and global legislation across relevant materials; for example product categories such as homeware and footwear (topics dependent on candidate experience). Engage and train internal teams on relevant legislation including emerging or existing legislation. Develop audit processes and support commercial teams to implement relevant legislation Lead horizon-scanning activities for relevant topic areas; Research and track NGO (non-governmental organisation) activity on relevant materials and product categories;

About you

Experience in a retail environment in a sustainability function including knowledge of the textile and/or homeware/footwear industries, responsible sourcing and the environmental impacts of the fashion industry. Project management skills - ability to manage multiple areas of work and ensure deadlines are met and work is delivered to a high standard. Attention to detail and accuracy essential- ability to research, understand and relay information on legislation and advise actions as required to the relevant stakeholders. Highly IT literate – excellent written, numeracy and presentation skills. Ability to relate to and communicate with people at all levels both internally and externally (worldwide) to both impart and gain knowledge. Commercially aware with a good understanding of the /textile / leather / footwear/ homeware industry. Inquisitive and confident - enjoys researching and summarising information on unknown subjects. High level of engagement and knowledge in environmental and sustainability issues. Ability to travel internationally (when permitted). Open to part-time and full-time applicants

Desirable

Specific expertise eg such as textile / denim / leather / footwear / homeware within retail or related industry. Experience of developing programmes of work across multiple responsible sourcing topics. Understanding of legislation relating to responsible sourcing and certification.
