The National Unscheduled Care Programme facilitates whole system development and delivery of improvement programmes which reflect best practice and support the delivery of the Right Care in the Right Place. The underpinning objective of the programme is to improve the Unscheduled Care experience for patients and staff alike.

The programme currently consists of 5 portfolios of work:

  • Community Urgent Care
  • Flow Navigation
  • Hospital at Home/Virtual Capacity
  • Front Door/Emergency Pathways
  • Optimising Patient Flow

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for Clinical Advisors in the Centre for Sustainable Delivery’s (CfSD) Unscheduled Care Programme.  The ideal applicants will be credible clinical leaders, knowledgeable subject matter experts with experience in Unscheduled Care, and will be able to demonstrate these qualities in their work to date.

They will provide clinical and improvement expertise to support the development, design and delivery of work to improve the quality, timeliness and safety of Unscheduled Care across NHS Scotland. Therefore, experience in using improvement methods is required to help teams develop practise consistent with Realistic Medicine.  The role will require someone who understands the challenges facing Unscheduled Care and can act as a change agent, engaging with operational and strategic leaders.

The post will report into the National Clinical Lead for Unscheduled Care, under the overall leadership of the Associate Clinical Director for the Centre for Sustainable Delivery but will be expected to work with the wider unscheduled care team including National Associate Director, Regional Managers and Improvement Advisors.  This work will build on the work currently underway, driving sustainable change across NHS Scotland.

The CfSD is commissioned by the Scottish Government to support NHS Boards and Health and Social Care Partnerships to deliver safe and effective care and improve outcomes for the people of Scotland. The Centre supports delivery of several wide-ranging and complex national programmes of work, of which the National Unscheduled Care Programme is one. 

Its purpose is to:

  • Design and drive national redesign and transformation programmes to enable a sustainable health and care system providing world class excellence in care experience and outcomes
  • Undertake research and publish evidence based learning to establish the CfSD as an internationally recognised unit for system change
  • Facilitate co-design and transformation through collaboration and partnership working – developing and maintaining networks of clinicians and senior leaders across different specialities and settings across health and social care, including primary, secondary and social care
  • Support Boards across the country to understand their most productive opportunities though data and analysis and drive the delivery of high quality services, reducing variation and promoting a best-in-class, once for Scotland approach
