The Division of Mechanics and Materials is looking to appoint a Research Engineer to support our High Temperature Testing (HTT) and Thermal Mechanical (TM) laboratory facilities. Working in the subject areas of thermo-mechanical loading, fracture testing, and metal forming the post holder will have the opportunity to participate in research and contribute to significant reports and publications in materials testing. The postholder will also engage with our undergraduate and postgraduate students, contributing to their training in becoming the next generation of mechanical engineers.
The postholder will work primarily with Dr Catrin Davies (Reader in the Structural Integrity of Alloys) to experimentally test Fracture, fatigue, stress, creep deformation and material property characterisation. With advanced experimental facilities and equipment, our research in this area has a wide range of industrial applications, including being incorporated into industrial codes and testing standards.
This role sits within the Technical Services team, which supports the smooth running of laboratories and workshop facilities across the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Appointment at either Research Engineer (level 3a) or Senior Research Engineer (level 3b) will depend on the experience of the successful applicant.
You will be integral to the smooth operations of the HTT and TM laboratory facilities.You will provide technical support, training and teaching to users of the laboratories, and as part of the solid mechanics undergraduate modules.You will support the research activities being undertaken in the HTT and TM labs, supporting your fellow Research Engineers as needed.You will have the opportunity to input into the development of laboratory infrastructure,
Appointment to Senior Research Engineer (level 3b) will involve a greater level of autonomy, coordination and management of the facilities.
A BTEC/HNC or recognised apprenticeship (or equivalent) is required for this position. Applicants with a relevant degree coupled with hands-on experience will be considered.You must have experience of working in a research laboratory.You will have experience in troubleshooting operational equipment / machinery problemsYou will be able to interpret engineering drawingsA sound understanding of health and safety is essential.
