At The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, our IPC Team is an integral part of patient care and quality.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Infection Prevention and Control Auditor. This is a brilliant opportunity to join a well-respected team, in a centre of excellence.

An ability to work with IT systems and experience working in a clinical role is desirable. No previous Infection Prevention experience is required as we are looking for keen, motivated individuals, with a desire to improve patient outcomes and service delivery towards Infection Prevention by taking part in this work. Support and training will be provided to the successful candidate. An ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and flexibly in an intense and changeable climate is required.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have an integral role in providing planned and unplanned, support to the Infection Prevention and Control Team (IPCT) in relation to clinical audit.

This will involve:

Collection and input of specific data from a variety of sources including case notes, computer systems and direct patient contact. The data will be used to promote safe, cost-effective care.

Working autonomously and alongside the IPCT, undertaking clinical and ward-based audit in line with audit schedules as set out in the IPC audit programme.

Collecting and reviewing audit data using local and national tools.

Managing a range of IPC database/information systems relating to clinical audit.

Supporting the wider delivery of the IPC operational plan and annual programme of work.

The role is full time - per week from Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

Job responsibilities

KEY CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROFESSIONAL

Maintain and ensure compliance with agreed policies and procedures and consistency with working practices.

Organise and prioritise own workload ensuring effective time management, working flexibly to meet the needs of the service, which may require short term adjustment to plans ensuring that effective diary management is maintained.

Good working knowledge and experience of utilising standard Microsoft programs such as word, excel, power point, outlook, SharePoint etc.

Contribute to ensuring the highest possible standards of cleanliness within the Trust clinical premises and ensure all staff are familiar with escalation procedures for additional cleaning.

Travel to and from Trust sites as required.

Assist in the development and delivery of training as part of the IPC teams training Programme in relation to auditing principles and processes.

Work closely with IPC Practitioners in the development and review of audit tools and IPC initiatives for promoting best practice.

CLINICAL

This is both a clinical and office-based role however this is not a direct patient facing role. The post holder will work in clinical areas undertaking audits and observation of practice, working alongside the IPCT, and liaising with clinical teams as well as non-clinical teams, patients, and visitors as part of their duties.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

Provide training and support to new members of the IPCT and clinical teams in relation to new auditing processes and practices.

COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Communicate effectively audit result and compliance details, which may be of a contentious nature, with local management teams including senior managers.

Provide feedback including judgements and recommendations for actions to resolve areas of non-compliance, which may require negotiation and persuasion skills for implementation, to the local management teams and/ or operational staff.

To take action to resolve problems identified through the monitoring process, which are an immediate risk, or report problems to the relevant manager for action to be taken.

Develop and maintain effective communication links with managers and clinical staff across all Trust sites.

Liaise with service and contract managers and take appropriate action to advise, resolve and rectify any issues as necessary.

To manage sensitive situations where a difference of opinion exists in the operational environment.

Liaise with other departments and services to disseminate information efficiently.

To attend meetings where management are likely to be resistant to the audit review and particularly to audit findings in respect of potentially sensitive and contentious issues.

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT Responsibilities

Monitor and analyse IPC data to highlight themes and trends in reporting and compliance levels. To enable targeted support and challenge to improve standards across the Trust, in line with agreed key performance indicators.

Analyse audit findings and intelligence to establish areas of concern and/ or good practice for enhanced support/ monitoring to promote improvement utilising a risk-based approach.

Perform IPC quality assurance audits in-line with the Trust IPC audit programme and schedule, audits will be performed in all clinical areas. Audits will remain in line with requirements set out by the Trust, Department of Health and the Health and Social Care Act (2008) code of practice for the prevention and control of infections.

PLANNING AND ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS

Produce detailed audit reports forming conclusions and judgements of compliance with national best practice guidance and make recommendations for actions to rectify areas of non-compliance.

Maintain records in electronic databases, ensuring that the information recorded is entered with a high degree of accuracy and in a timely manner.

Report Key Performance Indicators to the IPC team, identifying audits performed, their outcomes and areas of good practice or for improvement with associated judgements and recommendations of actions required.

To maintain documented records of corrective or preventative actions taken and recommended actions, performing follow-up visits to monitor progress and compliance of set actions.

Provide monthly update, establishing reporting baseline with IPC Practitioners (verbally/written).

Essential

GSCE Maths and English Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent qualifications. NVQ level 3 or equivalent in a Health Subject

Desirable

Infection Prevention Control qualification or willing to work towards. Qualification in quality management Care Certificate or willing to work towards
