We have an exciting role for a band 5 - 6 developmental post for a registered nurse leading to a permanent band 6 position within the Chemotherapy Treatment Unit.

The post holder will be expected to work alongside the band 6 nurses and will be supported by the ward manager and Practice Development nurse (Job currently out to advert). During this period, you will be expected to complete competencies and objectives in addition to the SACT Passport/ and an oncology course which will lead to an uplift to a permanent Band 6 Senior Nurse.

You will participate in the assessment of patient across a complex and changing caseload of cancer patients to meet the individual’s health and wellbeing needs throughout the cancer pathway and confidently take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of or as delegated by the unit manager/nurse in Charge/Matron.

Main duties of the job

Develop the skills and ability to manage the clinical workload effectively, ensuring patients care is prioritized appropriate.

To lease with the oncology medical staff as appropriate, recognizing patients who require medical support attending the unit.

To develop and gain knowledge of and to manage the potential complications and side effects of chemotherapy e.g. extravasation and chemotherapy spillage.

Develop an understanding of the treatments used within the Treatment unit. This includes the correct pre/post checks, identification and the safe administration of treatments for patients receiving SACT/non cytotoxic.

To develop the skills and knowledge to be able to support the coordinator in identifying work priorities and allocation of patients.

To ensure that patient confidentiality is always maintained and ensure health and safety regulations are always adhered to.

To be responsible for the safe use and maintenance of equipment within the Chemotherapy Unit and act on clinical incidents pertinent to area to reduce clinical risk.

To plan, assess and evaluate the care delivered to individual patients and support required for their families, whilst the individual is undergoing SACT, cytotoxic and supportive therapies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To plan, assess and evaluate the care delivered to individual patients and support required for their families, whilst the individual is undergoing SACT, cytotoxic and supportive therapies.

Acts always in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct (Ensures working colleagues also act in accordance with Code of Conduct), and within the principles of the scope of Professional Practice and ensures other members of the team also work within these.

Record patient data in the correct form and manner, and input into the following database: ChemoCare, Careflow EPR etc

Work towards the management and organization of a group of patients seeking advice where necessary.

To become proficient in the insertion and management of peripheral cannula and to be confident in the management and accessing central venous catheters and administer chemotherapy after completing theoretical and practical training in line with national guidance.

Demonstrate the correct storage, and handling of SACT within the unit this includes collection of treatment.

Ensure the unit operates in a professional and responsible manner, and follows the systems and procedures of NMUH, including health and safety and confidentiality.

Continually evaluate the effectiveness of the service provided. Particular attention will be paid to the opinions of both patients and professional users of the service. 

Take responsibility for supporting the unit manager in the development of the service, the post holder will be expected to undertake a presentation to the unit during the development phase.
