Primark Technology & Data is on a multi—year transformation to enable the wider business, which includes modernising our operating model as well as technology foundations. 

The Head of Platform Engineering will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical foundation of the organisation, driving innovation, and ensuring platforms align with both current and future needs. The platform product function, as such, is still in its nascent phase and requires a leader with experience in building a high-performing platform engineering team. They will be accountable for the development and implementation of the capability through partnerships, transforming core platforms, optimising cost, and implementing DevOps & SRE practices. 

The core platforms include Oracle Retail, Microsoft Azure Integration platform, API management, and Data platforms. In essence, this role will own delivery of how data is stored, transferred, integrated and accessed by data analysts and insight teams as well as provisioned to store & online channels.

In your role, you’ll collaborate with different people across a range of skillsets. Here’s a flavour of your day-to-day:
  • Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive long-term product platform roadmap aligned with Primark’s growth objectives, collaborating closely with product engineering and architecture teams.
  • Portfolio Delivery: Own delivery of all core platforms' roadmap and backlog, covering both one-off change/ modernisation initiatives on Oracle Retail, Integration and Data, and incremental changes driven by the product teams e.g., new integrations, API/ microservices, data pipelines for data products etc.
  • Platform Architecture: Design and oversee the implementation of scalable, reliable, secure, resilient, and performant platform architectures, ensuring alignment with the product roadmap and architecture strategy.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product management teams to prioritise and deliver platform initiatives that enable the key business outcomes/OKRs, while ensuring that we maximise our investments in technology platforms. 
  • Technology Evaluation: Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to data analytics and AI, collaborating with product teams to identify opportunities for innovation and differentiation through platform enhancements.
  • Performance Optimisation: Monitor and optimize platform performance, reliability, and scalability to meet the evolving needs of applications, implementing best practices and proactive measures in collaboration with product teams.
  What You’ll Bring

  • + years of platform delivery & operations experience, shaping and supporting enterprise-grade core platforms, using multiple software, languages and tooling in both on-prem and cloud environments.
  • Demonstratable experience collaborating with product management teams, particularly in the development and deployment of data analytics and integrations solutions within a retail or online retailer context.
  • Demonstrable experience in leading modernisation of core platforms implementing headless (MACH or similar) and microservices patterns to improve their agility and reliability.
  • Deep understanding of ERP, data and integration platforms technologies, data processing frameworks, and model deployment pipelines, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, an advantage if there’s an understanding of machine learning and large learning models.
  • Proven track record of driving cross-functional collaboration between platform engineering and product management teams to deliver innovative solutions that meet business objectives and customer needs.
  • Familiarity with Oracle Retail latest versions, Teradata, data management & quality tools, and emerging practices for Analytics & AI engineering enablement. In-depth knowledge of system architecture, microservices platform development and cloud technologies (Azure preferably).
