Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an inspirational, driven and motivated Band 7 Team Leader, who has extensive experience within both elective and emergency surgery.

The role is highly operational; therefore the post holder will provide visible leadership to the theatre team and will be responsible to lead scrub disciplines within theatres.

We are looking for an exceptional individual who is proactive and motivated to deliver high-quality, safe and compassionate patient care, demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills and work well within a cohesive multidisciplinary team.

You will also demonstrate an aptitude to lead others in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice to improve quality, cost effective care and maintain our high standards of theatre practice.

Main duties of the job

The Team Leader within Theatre Services will be responsible for the Operational Management of the agreed aspect of the Operating Theatre Service, by the appropriate deployment, delegation, co-ordination and supervision of all grades of staff. The role will support and lead staff to ensure high quality care is delivered to all patients. The post holder will provide high quality, evidence based, patient centred care using specific knowledge and skills throughout the department, acting as a resource to other staff.

The role includes working closely and effectively with the multi-disciplinary team in the management of the department.

The role also includes the continuing responsibility for the effective delivery of the policies and standards of care in line with the Trust values.

Job responsibilities

Clinical / Leadership

Responsible for the management and leadership of theatre department on a 24-hour basis including organisation of the workload, allocation of appropriately skilled staff and ensuring planned surgery is delivered safely and effectively.

Responsible for own time management to meet clinical and management responsibilities.

Present a dynamic, innovative, enthusiastic role model providing leadership and guidance on both operational and specific speciality issues.

Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care, using expert knowledge and skills with particular reference to infection control and prevention and risk management.

Provide clinical leadership within the speciality ensuring that patients receive a high standard of care appropriate for their surgical and anaesthetic needs according to identified and agreed protocols.

Plan and maintain staff rotas for the clinical team to ensure the appropriate/available skill mix is allocated to ensure effective utilisation of sessions, working within E roster guidelines.

Develop a practical and problem solving approach to day-to-day difficulties in practice, working with the General Manager, Clinical Leads for Theatres and Team Leader colleagues.

Support the Clinical Leads in monitoring recruitment and retention and the use of extra hours and agency.

Actively support the Trusts Clinical Governance agenda.

Facilitate regular team meetings to ensure all staff are well informed in a timely manner and that staff at all levels are encouraged to participate and feedback in a constructive manner.

Ensure all documentation is completed accurately and legibly in accordance with good record keeping guidelines.

Report/record/investigate any risk management issues in line with Trust/theatre policy. Support Ward Matrons to investigate and respond to incidents/complaints where appropriate.

Demonstrate leadership and clinical expertise within the speciality team and develop clinical speciality expertise within all members of the team.

Ensure relevant knowledge for all aspects of the post is kept up to date.

Responsible for the general management of all equipment including maintenance, storage and housekeeping issues in relation to the clinical speciality.

Support the Clinical Leads for Theatres in the management of staff attendance by keeping accurate records and managing staff in accordance with Trust Policy. Liaise with HR for support in managing attendance issues.

Promote and provide a positive learning environment within the clinical area, actively engaging with all learners and act as mentor/assessor where appropriate. Work in collaboration with the Clinical Practice Educators to support staff development in practice.

Ensure that team members actively and effectively participate in the induction, mentorship, preceptorship and training of all new staff.

Support/provide in-service training for staff where appropriate and ensure learning opportunities are available and equitable to all staff.

Work with the Clinical Practice Educators to assess, plan and implement training and development requirements for own speciality area.

Ensure all staff are trained in the use of specialist theatre equipment and its clinical application.

Ensure mandatory training is facilitated and accessed for all team members including self. Monitor staff training records and ensure staff are rostered and able to attend training within agreed time scales.

Ensure compliance with all audits hygiene, staffing, infection control

Maintain professional registration and comply with professional code of conduct.

Participate in the Trust appraisal process to determine the development needs of team members and reflect Trust values and support delivery of Trust objectives. Ensure development plans are planned in conjunction with the staff member and are realistic, achievable and enable the individual to progression through their pay band gateways.

Participate in the Trust appraisal process to determine own personal development needs.

Support the Clinical Leads for Theatres in the management of available resources in terms of staffing, equipment and consumables. Maintain agreed stock levels and take action to rectify deficiencies immediately. Make certain that agreed levels are not exceeded to ensure the department operates within required budget at all times.

Ensure that departmental equipment is serviced properly and timely to maintain continuity of services at all times and, to ensure that the departmental 10 year rolling equipment replacement programme is updated at least yearly, more frequently as necessary.

Take part in the effective recruitment and selection of staff throughout theatres.

Comply with all Trust policies and procedures.

Any other duties at a comparable level of responsibility as may be allocated.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

An extensive knowledge of perioperative practice and an expertise within either ENT, Breasts or Urology, being able to demonstrate an ability to use analytical and judgment skills numerical analysis, critical reasoning, interpretation of information and complexity of decision making.

In the absence of the Clinical Leads for Theatres you may be responsible for planning and managing Theatre Services, including theatre lists and workload. This may be elective surgery or out of hours for emergency work. You will be required to liaise with relevant members of the multi-disciplinary team to resolve difficulties.

Measurable Result Areas:

To participate in the delivery of the clinical governance and risk management agenda of the department and Trust.

To develop and maintain effective communication systems with all personnel internal and external to the Trust.

To participate in multi-disciplinary clinical audit to ensure standards are continually reviewed and developed.

Participate in programmes of clinical trials of new equipment and supplies and in the evaluation and serviceability of existing equipment. Co-operate in research procedures and clinical audit.

Participate in developing departmental policies & procedures, to ensure evidence based practice.

Responsibility for financial and physical resources, maintaining stock levels and/or ordering.

Responsibility for ensuring information systems in theatre are completed with the correct data input.

Support staff induction, ensuring you contribute to an environment conducive to learning, supporting all learners and junior staff in the team. Demonstrating an ability to manage a poor performer by action planning.

Communications and Working Relationships:

Demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic approach in order to maintain high morale and motivation within the department.

Accepts responsibility for developing competence in relation to the medical devices he/she will be expected to use.

Maintain and develop own professional knowledge, providing feedback to staff from any courses attended.

Excellent knowledge of anatomy and applied physiology and an ability to teach formally and informally Evidence of a positive approach to implementing change in practice.
