Overall Position Summary andObjectives

The Fogarty InternationalCentres Division of International Science Policy Planning andEvaluation (DISPPE) conducts science policy strategic planning andevaluation. Within DISPPE the Center for Global Health Studies(CGHS) identifies global health challenges and stimulates NIHengagement; catalyses new research approaches; and providesleadership in implementation science. The individual contributes toDISPPE functions and conceptualizes and leads CGHS projectsincluding conducting formative research consulting with expertsorganizing workshops and trainings and collaborating with NIHpartners. The Senior Scientist will facilitate deliverables e.g.scientific publications training resources networks andtoolkits.

Statement of WorkDetails

Researches andevaluates the operation of the organizations scientificprograms.

  • Work with staffon existing projects and/or the development initiation andexecution of new project initiatives.2
  • Work with staff on theconcept development planning execution and support of allprojectrelated activities. 1
  • Organize and maintain project documentation andcommunications; track project progress using project managementtools.
  • Review and proofread programmaticdocuments describing scientific and management issues and policiesrelated to their designated program.
  • Trackaction items and tasks provide deadline reminders to Program staff;maintain spreadsheets of relevant information.
  • Request information from and provide responses toprincipal investigators program staff and others on scientific andprogrammatic issues.

Researches interprets and summarizes backgroundmaterials from a variety of scientific sources.

  • Conduct literature searches in PubMed Web ofScience and other information sources; manage references usingbibliographic software.
  • Conduct search formaterial for a specific programmatic need using a database tosearch for material in many cases.
  • Organizeand analyze reports in a scientific area as assigned.
  • Read interpret analyze and condense material from avariety of sources for presentation.
  • Createscientific search criteria for locating scientific program andrelated information on the internet and other means includingliterature and database searches.

Compiles data and creates and prepares graphsslides and presentations.

  • Prepare scientific and programmatic presentationmaterials such as tables graphs slides abstracts posters andoverheads by assimilating and mastering the scientific data andprogrammatic context for use at presentations andmeetings.
  • Conduct searches for material for aspecific programmatic need and/or presentation; use a database tosearch for material as necessary.
  • Collect readinterpret analyze and condense material from a variety of sourcesand prepare reports of data analysis for presentation.
  • Prepare presentation materials such as handouts meetingmaterials slide presentations and background/supplemental documentsspreadsheets charts and graphs for conferences committee .meetingsworkshops and group updates.

Performs logistical planning of variousscientific meetings lectures workshops.

  • Attend meetings training and conferences insupport of program initiatives.
  • Identifyassess draft edit revise and assemble necessary backgroundmaterials.
  • Work with staff to identify keyissues and track action items and tasks providing deadlinereminders to Program staff and update and maintain spreadsheets ofrelevant information.
  • Represent the Program atlocal and national meetings; deliver presentations and posters;disseminate details of the Program and collect information of valueto the Program goals.
  • Draft review andproofread programmatic documents such as conference agendas meetingagendas letters to presenters participant lists handouts emailsthank you letters and reports.

Plans organizes and participates at a seniorlevel in technical meetings and consultations.

  • Work with staff to coordinate and planscientific meetings including communications with distinguishedlecturers invited guests and participants registration and meetinglogistics. 3
  • Prepare andgive formal presentations for division leadership and otherinterest groups.
  • Give regular progress reportsto sponsor and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate withstrategic project leaders on the logistics annual inpersonCommittee meetings monthly teleconferences or videoconferences andadditional teleconferences videoconferences or electronic reviewsto address key issues.
  • Maintain ongoingproactive communication with key personnel throughout theinitiative; gather provide and exchange information with Networkinvestigators their staff and other relevant individuals.

Reviews and evaluates theperformance of the organization.

  • Organize and coordinate program activities; manageagendas meetings background materials and minutes.
  • Provide project management support for large and/orcomplex projects with internal and external stakeholders and otherproject participants.
  • Ensure that all aspectsof the programs are tracked and reported key milestones anddeliverables dates are known and adhered to and that allindividuals and partners involved are kept appraised of progress ofintegrated tasks and next steps.
  • Draft fundingplans; develop milestones and budgets for current and potentialprojects; and for transitioning projects through different phasesand stages.

Analysesexisting scientific programs and makes recommendations forimprovement.

  • Defineproblems; analyze alternatives; recommend solutions to completeproblems affecting the conduct of research programs.
