Job overview
East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust are recruiting an Apprentice Orthoptic Assistant practitioner to join our friendly and dynamic team who deliver orthoptic services in Ipswich.
This role is predominantly based at Ipswich hospital and may include occasional cross site training and working. This is a developmental role, and as such you will be required to complete the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship with The University of Essex alongside undertaking training within the department, and will be suitably assessed against a range of clinical competencies.
Orthoptists are Allied Healthcare Professionals, with an extremely varied case load. Orthoptists are crucial to the delivery of high quality services within the ophthalmology team, assessing babies, children and those with communication difficulties to assess their vision; and they manage and treat a range of conditions leading to misalignment of the eyes in patients of all age groups.
The department delivers adult and paediatric services, in-patient and out-patient stroke services, specialist SEN clinics in special schools and is an accredited department for orthoptic undergraduate student placements.
Main duties of the job
You will be trained and supported by the team to play a part in delivering high quality orthoptic services and will include a wide variety of clinical and non-clinical duties.
With training and support, to conduct a range of orthoptic/ophthalmic procedures under the guidance and supervision of an Orthoptist whilst working within agreed departmental protocols and guidelines.
To carry out some administrative and other housekeeping tasks, contribute to service improvement and demonstrate their duties to other staff and students.
To undertake the Assistant Practitioner Apprenticeship. This will take 24 months, including the assessment, doing a mixture of on-campus (Colchester) and work-based learning.

We pride ourselves on supporting our staff. We offer a wide range of training and development opportunities, as well as flexible working options.
Along with supporting you to achieve your career goals we offer a generous pension scheme, unsocial hours payments (where applicable), 27 days annual leave on commencement (pro rata) and access to a range of NHS discounts. Our Staff Health and Wellbeing programme offer a variety of services.
Our philosophy is that Time Matters to everyone. Across the Trust, we concentrate on improving the things we do and removing those which cause time delays for our staff and patients.
We are investing in our commitment to Time Matters with a partnership with leading electronic patient record (EPR) supplier Epic. This digital transformation will bring what’s widely regarded as the world’s best EPR system to ESNEFT, transforming life in hospital for staff and patients.
