The 10chaired day unit cares for patients with a range of cancers who are receivingsystemic anti-cancer therapies. We are looking for someone who wants to demonstratetheir Oncology/Haematology experience and wants to work within this rewardingenvironment. Applicants should be calm in a busy environment, an excellent teamplayer, have a tactful, sensitive manner, prioritises patient safety. Theability to communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinaryteam is essential.

Thesuccessful candidate will need to be passionate about delivering excellent careand with a flexible approach and a willingness to contribute to improvements inthe service.

As a part ofthe countywide service delivering anti-cancer treatments you may be required totravel between sites on occasions.

Main duties of the job

To assistthe Nurse Manager in providing clinical and managerial leadership to all staffand with the delivery of the Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) service,ensuring systems and processes are updated as required.

To beprofessionally and clinically responsible to patients within the unit,providing and maintaining a high standard of care and maintaining acommunication link between patient and organisation.

Contributeto the development of clinical practice, with regards to Departmental, Trustand National recommendations, communicating this to junior colleagues in apositive manner. To maintain a consistent, motivated approachto the service and act as a resource to the Trust.

Able totravel between day units, to assist when required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Assistin the management of the department on a day to day basis and manage thedepartment in the absence of Chemotherapy unit manager including coordinationof patient, allocating staff breaks and being a key link with the consultantsand pharmacy team.

Assesspatients for chemotherapy to ensure their physical condition and blood parameters are satisfactory to safely receivetreatment according to treatment protocols / regimes and liaise with medicalstaff as appropriate.

Administerand dispose of intravenous and chemotherapy safely in accordance with Trust andNational Guidelines.

Provideinformation regarding treatment and side effects to ensure each patient isprepared for their specific treatment and elicit informed consent.

Provideone to one and telephone advice to patients and their families regardingtreatment side effects and management of side effects to ensure each patientreceives care which is specific and appropriate to their needs.

Usegood communication skills to enhance and augment patients understanding andadapt information to their specific needs as they progress through treatment.

Liaisewith other appropriate health care professionals within both hospital andcommunity settings regarding individual patient care to ensure seamlesstransfer of care between disciplines (or ensure patients needs are beingadequately met).

Recogniseand provide the psychological and emotional support needed by individuals andtheir families whilst undergoing treatment and refer on to other professionalssensitively and appropriately in order to adequately meet patients needs.

Assesspatients with difficult venous access and make recommendations for alternativeaccess to ensure patients receive treatment safely and with minimum risk.

Ensuresafe administration of chemotherapy regimens according to trust protocols

Providefollow-up care / maintenance of central venous lines for patients and adviseother health care professionals involved as appropriate, to ensure thepatients line is safely and adequately cared for in accordance with Trustpolicy.

Administerother intravenous therapies Blood, bisphosphonates, to patients accordingto protocols / regimes to ensure therapies are delivered safely and withminimum risk

Monitorand instigate care to address / prevent reactions to and complications oftreatment including administration of prophylactic agents.

Discusswith senior nursing and medical colleagues developments and changes, whichaffect patients both directly and indirectly.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in compiling duty rosters and ensuring allocationis organised appropriate to staff experience and skill mix to effectivelymanage workload and patient dependency.

Participatein staff recruitment and retention, training and education.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in ensuring an appropriate learning environment,which meets university requirements, and that systems are in place to allow alllevels of learner to be taught, supervised and assessed appropriately.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in development of staff induction programmes andward teaching programmes.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in ensuring that systems are in place formaintaining practical schemes for mentorship, preceptorship and clinicalsupervision.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in ensuring that preceptorship periods are keptwithin an agreed time frame and that accelerated progression is applied asappropriate for newly qualified bad 5 staff.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in ensuring all staff undergo competencyassessments both initially (when new to ward) and update these regularly inline with Corporate Nursing recommendations.

AssistSenior Sister / Charge Nurse in ensuring all staff have their performancereviewed and their development needs met in line with department objectives.Ensure these appraisals are carried out using the appropriate KSF profile andProforma. Ensure they are logged within ESR by the training staff.

Reportperformance difficulties with staff to the Senior Sister and initiateperformance Management / goal setting according to capability or disciplinarypolicies as appropriate.

Tosupport Junior Nurses with their NMC revalidation acting as a confirmer tomaintain their professional registration.

Provideopportunities for staff support, guidance, advice and counselling.

AssistSenior Sister in ensuring annual leave for all staff is managed in accordancewith local and Trust policy and in order to meet the needs of the service.

AssistSenior Sister in ensuring that the staff absence at work policy is used tomanage staff and maintain accurate records.

Maintainan up to date understanding of clinical and professional developments withinnursing, particularly areas pertinent to the speciality requirements.

Provideguidance and teaching for nursing staff, who are not experienced in thespecialty / to set, implement and monitor patient care plans.

Actin a supportive role to other senior staff and their staff by providingeducation and information to assist them in caring for trauma / otherspeciality outliers.
