Job responsibilities

The Young Adult Service is a unique and developing service for those aged 18-35 living with life limiting conditions and /or complex health needs that cannot be met in other settings. The clinical practice educator will be responsible for promoting high standards of care through the demonstration of clinical expertise and for creating an environment that encourages learning, professional and practice development. The role focusses on building the capacity and capability of the team through the delivery of high quality, safe and effective clinical teaching and learning programmes. Job Summary:To be responsible, in conjunction with the Head of Young Adult Services, for ensuring that young adults and families referred to the service receive competent, evidence based care that complies with relevant national and professional standards. To be a role model and provide visible senior clinical leadership to all staff working in the Young Adult Service, demonstrating and exemplifying positive behaviour and attitudes whilst promoting clinical excellence. Work alongside registrants, care support workers and other healthcare practitioners to develop the quality of care across the Young Adult Service. Duties & Responsibilities:Work in partnership with the Head of Service, Team Leader and Education and Development Lead on the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical / care services. Work in partnership with Team Leader and the Education and Development Lead on the development / overview of clinical policies and procedures and risk assessments. Work in partnership with Head of Service, Team Leader and the Education and Development Lead for workforce planning and development across the Young Adult Service to ensure that the staff employed are fit for purpose. Responsibilities for Patient CareWork in clinical practice alongside staff to support, supervise and assess training and development needs. Responsibilities for ResourcesObserve a personal duty of care when using equipmentTo ensure that systems are in place for the safe and effective use of equipment, ensuring all equipment is safe, maintained and in good working order. To ensure that the Young Adult Service has the necessary resources and equipment to provide the service. Strategic and Service ResponsibilitiesTo be involved in the strategic and operational development and delivery of the service as an active member of the Senior Management Team. To implement and evaluate service changesAttend and contribute to meetings appropriate to roleTo contribute to the development of strategies and policies for service improvement and developmentTo ensure that the Head of Service is provided with reports on mandatory training and clinical competencies that may be required at relevant committeesTo promote the philosophy of The Dougie Mac beyond the establishmentTo act at all times with the highest possible standards of integrity and professionalism, acting as a positive role model inside the organisation and an effective ambassador externallyDemonstrate leadership in the promotion of practice development throughout hospice servicesManage own workload independently and prioritising as requiredMaintain awareness of current clinical and professional issuesBe accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Conduct (NMC 2015) Training and EducationIn partnership with the Education and Development Lead, create and embed a culture of life-long learning and continuous professional developmentWork in partnership with the Education and Development Lead in identifying areas for improvement and develop targeted teaching and learning activities to facilitate improvementWork in partnership with the Education and Development Lead on the implementation and analysis of competency assessment tools to enhance staff development. Develop and deliver training and educational programmes and optimise leaning activities for practitioners;Support Registrants and Care Support staff in developing the necessary skills and knowledge to care for young adults with palliative / complex care needsSupport Registrants in developing and maintaining competency in medicines management administration including subcutaneous & intravenous drug administrationProvide high quality and innovative teaching and assessing in the clinical settingTo attend staff development programmes, training courses and study days as deemed necessary by the Head of ServiceTo take personal responsibility for attendance at mandatory trainingTo take personal responsibility for ensuring all competency assessments are completed and reassessed on an annual basisTo take personal responsibility for identifying any gaps in knowledge / skills and taking appropriate action to rectify this Communications and Working RelationshipsThe post holder is expected to foster excellent working relationships with all service recipients, staff, visitors and donors. In particular they are expected to deal sensitively with all those whom they come into contact with.To act at all times in a professional manner, respecting the needs of colleagues and cooperating to maintain a harmonious working environment

Qualifications

Essential

- Registered Nurse - Degree level qualification - Evidence of working in a training / mentoring / coaching role

Desirable

- Evidence of post qualifying study or training in palliative or complex care

Experience

Essential

- Minimum of 5 years post qualification working experience - Experience of supporting the development of a team and their clinical competencies - Experience of managing / leading a skill mixed team of staff - Experience of Service improvement / development / quality improvement initiatives / audits / standards

Desirable

- Experience of Long Term Ventilation / Tracheostomy care
