We have an exciting opportunity for a well-organised, enthusiastic and self-motivated Pharmacy Technician with a keen interest in the provision of Medicines Management to work with our paediatric respiratory and cardiac pharmacist teams.  This is a part time role at hours per week.
The post is suitable for patient focused technicians who are sensitive to the needs of the patients, parents and carers with excellent patient counselling, communication and interpersonal skills. A methodical and flexible approach to working is essential, as well as excellent team working skills.
The successful applicant must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC

Main duties of the job

  • Initiate supply of medicines against clinically screened prescriptions at the request of ward pharmacists
  • Maintain stock control of medicines to ensure availability of medicines by good record keeping and regular checks of patients’ medicines lockers
  • Work closely with cardiac ward staff and pharmacists in order to facilitate a timely discharge by utilising patients’ own drugs and newly prescribed / dispensed items
  • Counsel patients and carers regarding their medicines including the supply and the use of appropriate leaflets and medicines reminder charts
  • To accurately dispense NHS and private outpatient, in-patient and discharge prescriptions in accordance with the standard operating procedures.
  • To accurately dispense ‘unlicensed medicines’, extemporaneous preparations and controlled drugs as required
  • To dispense Clinical Trials in accordance with Good Clinical Practice as role requires
  • To be responsible for own continuing professional development (CPD)
  • To attend and participate in the various departmental meetings including the lunchtime CPD sessions
  • To contribute to service review, performance monitoring, clinical audit, research & development.

  • BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) Level 3 (City and Guilds)
  • GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician
  • Medicines Optimisation Programme Accredited Checking Technician (ACPT)
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science (QCF) or equivalent qualification supported by Pharmacy work experience
Experience/KnowledgeEssential criteria
  • Hospital pharmacy including dispensary experience
  • One-stop or Near patient pharmacy ward experience
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Proven experience in training and assessment of junior staff
  • Dispensing and Distribution stock control systems
  • Experience of medicines management and medicines reconciliation
Desirable criteria
  • Use of medicines in specialist area of paediatrics
