Job Introduction

We’re looking for an experienced Freedom of Information practitioner to join the BBC’s Information Rights team as a Senior Lawyer . The role is based at our London W1 office and you will report to the Legal Director of the Information Rights team. This is a twelve month fixed-term opportunity to cover maternity leave.


The BBC Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice to the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBC’s legal strategy. The BBC Legal Division is led by the BBC’s General Counsel and provides legal assistance & advice across the BBC. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment , Litigation, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial, Design and Engineering and Competition Law.


Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and relatively fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible and hybrid working policies.

Main Responsibilities

As a Senior Lawyer , you will advise on and manage a wide variety of freedom of information matters including complex freedom of information requests, Internal Reviews, and Information Commissioner and Tribunal cases. You will work alongside your colleagues in the Information Rights team as well as other teams in the Legal Division together with senior BBC stakeholders from across the BBC. You will also be required to supervise the work of more junior members of the team.

Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role, you will be legally qualified with a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience and have a significant level of experience advising on the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The role will require experience of the media sector and demonstrable understanding of the application of these legal frameworks and their associated regulatory guidance to the media sector.


Confident in dealing with a wide range of policy and legal matters, you will possess strong analytical skills with a proven ability to provide clear and succinct guidance to support sound commercial, policy and legal advice.


As an effective, articulate communicator with strong interpersonal and influencing skills, you will possess demonstrable experience of influencing key decision makers, underpinned by a resilient, pragmatic approach and an ability to build and maintain effective client relationships at all levels, in a dynamic environment.


Highly organised you'll be comfortable managing a diverse workload to tight deadlines and delivering training and presentations to a variety of audiences. You'll also need experience of supervising the work of more junior members of the team and overseeing more complex matters, as required.

Package Description

Band: E
Contract type: Twelve month fixed-term contract (maternity cover)
Location: London based role with some flexibility - i.e. hybrid working
Salary: £85,000 to £95,000pa (plus London Weighting £5,164pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
