Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Dental Therapist, who has aDiploma in Dental Therapy to work as a part of a team in a new created UrgentDental Access Centre in Carlisle.

The contracted posts are initially for a two-year contract and remuneratedon an hourly rate of £ - £ per hour depending on experience.

These exciting part time dental associate posts are located directly offjunction 42 of the M6 Carlisle, and located in the newly establisheddental facility at Cumbria HealthHeadquarters. CumbriaHealth Limited 4 Wavell Drive Rosehill Industrial Estate Carlisle CA1 2SE.

The practice focus is urgent dental care provisionand dental stabilisation. The service will be wholly NHS.

Each of the two newly equipped surgeries hasdigital radiography and the practice digital DPT. The new team will have practice manager working alongside aclinical director, dentists, nurse and therapists nurses working to deliverhigh quality care to the people of Carlisle and wider North Cumbriacommunities

Candidates are expected to have a diploma indental therapy, a certificate of proficiency in dental hygiene and are asked tosubmit their CV.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate willundertakepatient care and provide specific dental treatment under the direction of aregistered dentist who has examined the patient, and provided a writtenprescription of items of dental treatment which are identified as being withinthe scope of practice of a dental therapist, as laid down by the General DentalCouncil.

As per GDCguidance regarding direct access, dental therapists can carry out their fullscope of practice without prescription and without the patient having to see adentist first. There may be opportunities within this role to carry outtreatment under direct access depending on the skills, competences, andexperience of the successful applicant.

Job responsibilities

Thislist of duties and responsibilities, which follows, represents the broad rangeof tasks which may be required to be undertaken either routinely orperiodically. This list is not exhaustive,and the role may include additional duties which are not listed here.

MainDuties and Responsibilities

To develop team dentistry by applyingappropriate skills to a wide range of cases. To provide a wide range of dental treatment,appropriate to a registered dental therapist and hygienist at the request ofdentists

The additional duties of a dental therapistwill include the following:

Obtaina detailed dental history from patients and evaluate their medical history Carryout a clinical examination within their competence. Completeperiodontal examination and charting and use indices to screen and monitorperiodontal disease. Diagnoseand treatment plan within their competence. Prescriberadiographs. Take,process and interpret various film views used in general dental practice. Planthe delivery of care for patients. Giveappropriate patient advice. Providepreventive oral care to patients and liaise with dentists over the treatment ofcaries, periodontal disease and tooth wear. Undertakesupragingival and subgingival scaling and root surface debridement using manualand powered instruments. Useappropriate anti-microbial therapy to manage plaque related diseases. Adjustrestored surfaces in relation to periodontal treatment. Applytopical treatments and fissure sealants. Givepatients advice on how to stop smoking. Takeintra and extra-oral photographs. Giveinfiltration and inferior dental block analgesia. Place temporary dressings and re-cement crownswith temporary cement. Place rubber dam. Take impressions. Care of implants and treatment of peri-implanttissues. Carry out direct restorations on primary andsecondary teeth. Carry out pulpotomies on primary teeth. Extract primary teeth. Place pre-formed crowns on primary teeth. Identifyanatomical features, recognise abnormalities and interpret common pathology. Carry out oral cancer screening. If necessary, refer patients to otherhealthcare professionals. Keep full, accurate and contemporaneous patientrecords. Ifworking on prescription, vary the detail but not the direction of theprescription according to patient needs. For example, the number of surfaces tobe restored or the material to be used. Todevelop good communication with all members of the dental teams and referringpractitioners. Ensure information reaches all team members and relevantprofessionals in cases where treatment is shared. Produceand maintain accurate records of dental care, using computer systems were usedwithin the service, complete appropriate NHS forms ( FP17s forms) andassist with the data collection for service monitoring. Toassist in the management and maintenance of stock and equipment to ensuredental therapy services are maintained. Todevelop information for patients on relevant subjects. Toassist in organisational duties to ensure the smooth running of the dentalservices, including:

- To ensure that the appointment diary is usedefficiently in planning a sessions clinical activity.

- Collect and receipt patients charges inaccordance with NHS Regulations and ensure safe keeping of monies throughbanking in accordance with SDC Standing Financial Instructions.

Thepost is clinic based. The post holder may be asked to undertake duties in othersettings when required for holiday or sickness relief or temporaryredeployment. Knowledge

Essential

Trained to undertake additional therapy duties. Knowledge of current and future changes within the dental profession. Experience of full remit of work as per GDC guidelines.

Desirable

Knowledge of General Dental Services. Experience of dental therapy/hygiene practice in different settings. Post qualification experience. Experience of treating patients with special needs. Experience of dealing with cash transactions.

Skills and Aptitudes

Good communication skills, including clear and accurate written and oral skills. Good patient management skills. Modern skills of dental therapy and hygiene. Willingness to learn new skills.
