Job overview

We have an opportunity for candidates internal to the Royal London Hospital to apply for a Qualified SCP position working within our Theatre department, with a specialist qualification in gynaecology-oncology and urology surgical specialties. You will be skilled in robotic surgery as well as first and second assisting, whilst also participating in aspects of pre, peri and post-operative care of the patient under the direction of the Consultant Surgeons.

We are a progressive department and therefore the successful candidate must possess the right skills to drive forward service objectives for development and innovation whilst maintaining the day to day operation of the service. You will be expected to work at an advanced practitioner level and promote clinical excellence throughout the team and the organisation, whilst working closely with the other band 7 theatre coordinators, matrons, consultant colleagues and key stake holders.

You will be responsible for the professional development of the operating theatre teams you operationally and professionally manage, therefore it is essential that you possess excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills; have the drive and ambition to develop people, and have the ability to provide innovative ways of thinking to develop individuals and the robotic service as a whole.

The successful candidate must have an MSc qualification in Surgical Care Practice (or Band 7 considered for applicants with willingness to complete if successful in the absence of any appointable Band 8a candidates). You shall possess significant experience working as a relevant clinical nurse specialist or advanced theatre practice role. Experience of developing and leading on clinical audit is essential whilst research experience is desirable.

Main duties of the job

·To provide expert assistance and support in robotic surgery to the Consultant Surgeons, SPRs, theatre staff and patients involved in robotic surgery

·To provide a nurse specialist / Surgical First Assistant qualified nurse/ Surgical First Assistant (SFA) role. The primary purpose of this role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.

· Demonstrates significant advanced knowledge and skills within speciality and sphere of practice.

·Supports training within the Robotic surgery theatre team

·Have corporate identity as an expert within the specialist area of robotic surgery.

·Lead and provide training and education across the organisation in relevant area of practice.

Highly advanced physical skills, including highly developed hand to eye co-ordination. Oversight of training and practice of SCP team. Delivery of the robotic service – ensuring staff, consumables, kit & access to robot is organised in a timely fashion

Knowledge

Essential criteria

Registered nurse or trained surgical care practitioner with experience in robotic surgery in the relevant specialty Evidence of professional continuous development and portfolio of learning. Management training and leadership development. Recognised as an expert in the field of practice with the ability to clinically assess, diagnose and treat. Evidence of leading service change. Knowledge and experience of managing and leading a team.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Surgical Care Practice or at least 24 months experience as a surgical care practitioner with basic surgical skills course. Undertaken undergraduate / postgraduate study in research methodology. Teaching and mentoring qualification.
