Job summary

Having gained experience in a range of mental health settings, and through their experience, study, reflection, practice and training in clinical leadership the post holder will use their highly developed, specialist knowledge in forensic mental health and their sophisticated understanding of the relationship between occupation and mental health to provide occupational therapy " order to maintain, restore or create a match beneficial to the individual between the abilities of the person, the demands of her/his occupations in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure and the demands of the environment." (Adapted from Creek 2003).

Autonomous in their clinical practice, the post holder prioritises planning, delivering, and supervising interventions for people whose mental health problems have a marked impact on their occupational functioning and who have complex occupational needs. They will deliver a range of group and/or individual interventions drawn from relevant frames of reference, and demonstrating sophisticated skills of critical thinking, reflection and analysis in their clinical reasoning. They will be qualified and able to deliver a range of sensory integration assessments and interventions as well as advise the multi-disciplinary team about how to support the sensory needs of service users. They can manage challenging situations, and work with people with challenging problems, identifying and working to manage inherent risks.

Main duties of the job

Due to internal promotion, we are pleased to announce we are seeking a highly motivated individual who is able to offer skills as an occupational therapy specialist within Guild Forensic inpatient services. This is a very satisfying role focusing solely upon ensuring the delivery of quality occupational therapy to service users who require long term interventions. Working with two other band 7 occupational therapists the post will give chance to develop both clinical and managerial skills alongside project management and educational opportunities.

Applicants should have strong clinical skills and be able to demonstrate a sound awareness of the occupational risks and needs frequently experienced by people requiring admission to a forensic hospital. They will hold a caseload and be responsible for the provision and enhancement of occupational therapy across our male medium secure services. There will be an expectation to use evidence based practice to deliver management, clinical leadership, and supervision to junior occupational therapy team members.

oDiploma/BSC (Hons) in Occupational Therapy (OT) oState registered with Health Professionals Council. oPost graduate degree (or equivalent study) in relevant mental health speciality (or willingness to undertake same within one year of appointment) oPractice Placement Qualification (Undergraduate OT student educator)

Knowledge

Essential

oExpert knowledge of how mental health problems impact on occupational performance, and how occupational therapy theory informs practice within community mental health settings oExpertise in current best practice in forensic adult mental health , and awareness of relevant government directives and legislation oSpecialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions using expert level clinical reasoning.
