Provisional interview date: 10th July 2024

What it's like to work here

We're a relatively quiet property, with a friendly atmosphere, run by a small, dedicated staff team of 4 and wider team of volunteers. You'll be the most senior Collections person in the portfolio, managing a full time Collections Assistant, and reporting into the Property Operations Manager.

Whilst the role sits under Stowe, you will work predominantly at Claydon House, one of the properties in the Stowe and Aylesbury Vale portfolio. The portfolio consists of Stowe Landscaped Gardens, Claydon House, a medieval tower and duck decoy at Boarstall, Long Crendon Courthouse, and Buckingham Chantry Chapel. As the Senior Collections and House Officer for Claydon, you will take time out to care for the other properties in the portfolio, too.

Claydon has been occupied by the Verney family for more than 550 years; the place is a testament to their fascinating fluctuating fortunes, from their close involvement in the English Civil War, to the family connection with Florence Nightingale.

In the 1750s, at his family seat in Buckingham, ralph Verney set out to create a country house of extraordinary grandeur that would dazzle his wealthy neighbours and outdo his political rivals. Thirty years on he was facing financial ruin.

Today the interiors that remain are among the most ambitious and lavish ever created in teh eighteenth century.

What you'll be doing

As the senior lead of the House Team, you’ll manage a Collections Assistant and volunteers to implement preventive conservation and cleaning programmes in the house to ensure excellent standards of care and delivering strategies to improve conservation. You’ll be responsible for the planning and implementation of conservation projects, collections care and daily opening of the house, ensuring appropriate resources are in place to provide a consistent and excellent visitor experience.

You'll collect and accurately record information to inform our understanding of the house and the collection and use preventive conservation techniques to improve how we conserve, interpret and present the property. Leading by example you’ll ensure a culture of excellent customer care, engaging our visitors with conservation and the values and behaviours of the National Trust.

Who we're looking for

Outstanding people leadership skills and experience of working with and managing volunteers Operational experience of collections management and care in an historic environment including relevant collections management systems Demonstrate a solid understanding of preventive conservation and its practical, strategic application in the form of routine and deep cleaning programmes Knowledge of Health and Safety and Emergency Procedures Good organisational skills, with strong attention to detail Strong communication skills
