THE TEAM

The data science team is seeking a Senior Data Scientist/Operational Researcher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, ideally in the area of Network & Scheduling. Responsibilities include developing and implementing optimization models, analyzing data to identify innovation opportunities, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive delivery of the models we build.

This role reports into a Lead Data Scientist and is part of the Data Science team responsible for developing new prediction, simulation, optimization, and AI capabilities that will help transform easyJet into the world’s most data-driven airline.

JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for:

  • Leading the delivery of optimization algorithms and mathematical models that solve complex business problems with minimal support from senior team members.
  • Collaborating with the data science and analytics team to advance the team's optimization capabilities.
  • Communicating complex optimization concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Participating in the majority of the Data Science Project Lifecycle utilizing knowledge of the Data Science Toolbox.

Management Track:

  • Line managing junior team members with support from the senior leadership team.

Specialist Track:

  • Starting to develop a broad area of specialism (e.g., Optimization, Network & Scheduling) and becoming a valued expert within the Data Science team.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Contribute to the majority of the Data Science Project Lifecycle from idea to production.
  • Build, validate, and manage intermediate prediction, simulation, and optimization models and algorithms.
  • Work with senior team members to define and use key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure performance against business goals.
  • Understand and monitor data quality to improve confidence in the data used for analysis.
  • Follow Agile methodologies and a hypothesis-driven approach.
  • Contribute to hiring and building a great pool of Data Scientists for your team.

Management Track:

  • Define clear objectives for each individual you manage.
  • Ensure each individual you manage has a personal development plan and works proactively on it.
  • Carry out people routines for direct reports.

Specialist Track:

  • Develop a deep knowledge of a broad area of specialism (e.g., Optimization, Network & Scheduling) and act as a trusted expert within the Data Science team.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues within the Data Science team to help them develop technical excellence.
  • Deliver training sessions for the Data Science team in your specialist area.

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, and one compute optimized language.
  • Intermediate knowledge of optimization techniques such as Linear Programming, Integer Programming, Mixed-Integer Programming, and constraint programming.
  • Knowledge of both exact methods and (meta)heuristic methods of optimization.
  • Familiarity with the Data Science Toolbox (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Programming, Data Ingestion, Data Munging, Data Visualization, Machine Learning, Optimization, Simulation, Reinforcement Learning, and Big Data techniques).
  • Good analytical background, with a degree or MSc in a scientific/engineering field (Statistics, Maths, Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences) or equivalent commercial experience.
