We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Respiratory Consultant to join our team and lead our First Attendance Clinics . This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions.

Key Responsibilities: Initial Patient Assessment : Conduct comprehensive assessments, including detailed histories and physical examinations, to diagnose respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia, lung cancer, and interstitial lung diseases. Diagnostic Testing : Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including spirometry, chest X-rays, and CT scans, to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Treatment and Care Plans : Develop individualized treatment plans, prescribing medications and recommending non-pharmacological interventions. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for holistic patient care. Patient Education : Provide education on disease management, lifestyle changes, and medication adherence, ensuring patients are empowered to manage their condition. Multidisciplinary Collaboration : Work closely with respiratory nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated care and follow-up.

Job Summary:

The Respiratory Consultant will lead and manage the First Attendance Clinics within our Respiratory Medicine department. This role is crucial in the early diagnosis, management, and long-term care of patients presenting with a wide range of respiratory conditions. The postholder will provide expert clinical leadership, undertake direct patient care, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care.

Key Responsibilities:1. Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients attending the First Attendance Clinics with respiratory symptoms (, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing). Take detailed patient histories, including risk factors (, smoking, environmental exposures), and perform physical examinations to establish a diagnosis. Diagnose and manage common and complex respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension. 2. Diagnostic Testing and Interpretation Order and interpret diagnostic investigations, including pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volumes), imaging (chest X-ray, CT scan), and laboratory tests (, arterial blood gases, full blood count). Coordinate specialized tests or procedures (, bronchoscopy, biopsy) for further investigation when required. 3. Treatment and Management Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients, including pharmacological therapies (, inhalers, antibiotics, immunosuppressants) and non-pharmacological interventions (, smoking cessation, pulmonary rehabilitation). Manage acute exacerbations and chronic conditions, ensuring appropriate escalation of care when necessary. Provide holistic care by recommending lifestyle modifications, self-management strategies, and support services (, respiratory physiotherapy, dietetics, and palliative care). 4. Patient Education and Support Educate patients on their diagnosis, treatment options, and long-term disease management strategies. Offer support to patients and families, particularly in cases of chronic or terminal respiratory conditions, ensuring informed decision-making and a compassionate approach to care. Promote self-management techniques, including proper use of inhalers, home monitoring, and recognizing signs of exacerbations. 5. Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including respiratory nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals, to provide comprehensive care. Participate in weekly multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex cases, share knowledge, and review treatment plans. Work closely with secondary and tertiary care teams, ensuring seamless transitions for patients requiring further management. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Full GMC registration with a license to practice. Completion of specialty training in Respiratory Medicine (or equivalent). MRCP (or equivalent) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.

Previous experience working in sleep studies would be beneficial
