The Department of Earth Sciences is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced IT Specialist to join our IT team to help support IT services that provide for teaching, administration and research across the department. The role will be hands on, requiring a breadth of technical skill and experience working with a range of technologies across desktop and server management, as well as providing first and second line support to members of the department.

The Department, including the Sedgwick Museum, is based on two main sites, one in central Cambridge and the other at the Bullard Laboratories in West Cambridge. The person appointed will be expected to work flexibly across all areas of the Department and travel between the central and West Cambridge sites as required.

You will work closely with both senior and junior members of the team as well as be required to work independently to help update and maintain IT services to meet the changing needs of the department.

Key responsibilities include: support of users, including students, administrative staff, academic staff and research staff; UNIX/Linux server administration providing core services including file servers, application / web servers and network services such as DNS / DHCP; installation, configuration and management of Windows, Linux and Mac desktops; updating of documentation; providing technical assistance with specifying and ordering IT equipment; management of networking equipment.

Key skills and qualifications: degree level education in computing or equivalent experience; excellent communication skills and strong work ethics are required; ability and motivation to learn new skills and keep abreast of new technologies; ability to prioritize immediate tasks (such as different Help Desk requests); able to switch focus from other work to deal with Help Desk, colleague and user interruptions in a professional manner; proficiency in UNIX/Linux server and desktop management; a good working knowledge and recent experience MacOS and Windows desktop administration; experience of networking (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLAN). Some of the following skills would also be advantageous: shell scripting, programming (Python, Golang), Active Directory, configuration management.
