The scheme enables people to live in or be a part of a family environment, allowing them to become part of a community, where they can maintain existing friendships and develop new ones. They get support to gain the confidence and skills to become as independent as possible and they can see their own family and friends as much as they want.

People who use Bury Shared Lives tell us regularly about the surprising and positive changes they experience; they feel settled, valued and a sense of belonging, sometimes for the first time in their lives. It's a unique way for people to get support to live their best life.

The Shared Lives worker position will work alongside the Shared Lives Scheme manager, to develop, co-ordinate and oversee strategies for the ongoing recruitment of Shared Lives carers, to ensure a steady flow of applicants to meet the needs of vulnerable adults (allowing for matching and placement choice)

You will provide an efficient, welcoming, and friendly service to prospective carers, forming a valuable and supportive relationship with them, from the point of the initial enquiry to the completion of assessment and receipt of final panel approval.

Duties and responsibilities:

Recruitment and Induction

  • To co-ordinate the assessment and approval process ensuring that prospective Shared Lives carers receive information in a timely manner, understand the process and are supported through each stage.
  • To co-ordinate all required assessments and checks in respect of prospective Shared Lives Carers, documenting all evidence and decision making and making appropriate recommendations to the approval panel.
  • To ensure that a thorough induction is undertaken for each Shared Lives Carer including policies and procedures, mandatory training, roles and expectations and placement specific development needs.
  • To provide appropriate support to Shared Lives Carers, and appropriate support advice and assistance to potential carers throughout the assessment process to become a Shared Lives carer.

Referrals and Matching

  • To work closely with Social Work Teams to promote the Shared Lives service and the placements available and to accept referrals in a planned and professional way.
  • To ensure that consistent standards of support are met. To assess, match and introduce individuals to Shared Lives carer’s both for long term, respite placements and day care.
  • To identify any specific training, development and support which may be required for individual placements.

Review and Monitoring of Established Placements

  • To provide support, advice and signposting to Shared Lives Carers on a range of areas including care, safeguarding, MCA/DOLS, health and safety, and financial issues, to ensure they can meet the needs of the person/people they support as specified in the care plan.
  • To create and contribute to reports, updating and maintaining accurate support plans, reviews and risk assessments and facilitating/attending individual user groups, in which decisions effecting service delivery can be made thereby assisting in the monitoring process, respecting confidential information in line with the authority’s policies.
  • To monitor and evaluate placements, to ensure all placements meet the necessary quality and regulatory requirements of CQC.
  • To contribute to reports, plan and attend SU/SL Carer reviews and various professional meetings while maintaining accurate records, and advise the Shared Lives Manager of any recruitment issues or shortfalls in relation to standards set for assessment.
  • To support SL carer’s families in practical ways, offering advice on care, health and safety, financial issues, scheme management and hygiene, to ensure they can maintain the service users environment to the agreed standard in order to meet the standard agreed in their care plan.
  • Accurate recording of MARs charts, completing regular medication competencies for Shared Lives carers.
  • To complete annual Health and Safety checks on carers homes, assisting them to work on the electric systems of monthly health and safety checks. Documenting these reports, ensuring all areas of concerns are reported to the manager, and putting risk assessments in place if any areas of concerns are found.
  • To report any damage to equipment and shortcomings in local arrangements to a supervisor or line manager.
  • To ensure that appropriate management or organisational representatives are informed of; any apparent cases of serious or imminent danger, situations which present a significant risk to health or safety, and any shortcomings in departmental and/or organisational arrangements.

Administration

  • To liaise with the financial dept, in relation to carer payments.
  • To check timesheets and submitting these to the Controc payment system from Bury council.

Leadership

  • To assist the manager to meet the CQC standards
  • To provide day to day operational advice, guidance and leadership skills in the absence of the manager.
  • To be involved in the promotion and marketing of the Shared Lives service, especially raising awareness of Shared Lives within Bury’s minority groups in our community. To be involved in local provider meetings and task groups.
  • To establish and maintain links with other resources providing a service to adults with a learning disability, older people, people with a mental health illness or physical disability.
  • To contribute to the handling of complaints and issues that may arise.
  • To work in collaboration with other Shared Lives Scheme on panel meetings and joint working partnerships

Benefits

£25,979 per annum rising to £26,421 after successful completion of training and probation period.

37 hours per week

Fixed Term until March 2026
