Job summary

Lancashire Eye Centre is part of the nationally recognised Surgical Hub within Lancashire Teaching Teaching Trust. Designed with the patient experience at the forefront, the various segments of the building are colour-coded to ease patient navigation and improve accessibility for those who may need additional support.

The newly built unit offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment for our service users, including triage, rapid assessment, diagnostics and out patients, pre-op and ward level care. We also run services at our Preston hospital site.

We are looking for a strong Band 7 Unit Manager, a clinical leader who holds experience within the speciality of ophthalmology. We require an individual who is responsive to change and who can deliver the operational demands required daily.

You will be working under the Division of Surgery in the trust, within a supportive well established team to include Ophthalmology Consultants, Optometrists, Orthoptic, Specialist Nurses, Matron, business manager, Performance manager, clinical staff and administrative support.

Main duties of the job

Lancashire Eye Centre is a leading centre of excellence for ophthalmology within the North West of England. We offer a full service including, diagnostics, triage, rapid access, pre op, dedicated theatres and ward and out patients. The service is evolving and developing in line with the standards set out nationally, locally and by the GIRFT team and the National Surgical Hub standards.

We are looking for a leader who is dynamic and strives to lead by example who has experience of working within ophthalmology. Someone who is organised, responsive, and committed to drive forward service changes and improvements whilst developing their team and putting our patients needs at the forefront of any decision.

You will be responsible for providing clinical and managerial leadership to the nursing and multi-professional team within the service. This role will include evaluating patient pathways and provisions and the effectiveness of the standards of care delivery. The candidate will be responsible and accountable and act as a role model and coach for staff, providing developmental pathways and learning opportunities to future proof our service.

Job responsibilities

The main duties will involve:

- the managing of staff rota.

- managing staff training and competencies and development.

- managing staff sickness and attendance.

- managing staff annual leave.

- managing the service provision.

- adjusting working practice to meet service needs.

- working closely with members of the MDT, with the matron and business manager and performance manager.

- to support the development of staff and the service.

- to act as a role model and coach for staff.

- assess and manage risk through the internal incident report system.

- maintain standards through the audit process.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential

Appropriate NMC Registration Post-registration qualification or evidence of further study Management qualification or willing working towards Mentorship & Assessing qualification or working towards

Desirable

Leadership development Relevant speciality qualification, may be required for certain areas Critical Care)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Experience as a Deputy Unit Manager or equivalent role Experience in staff management, able to persuade, influence others & handle conflict A broad range of clinical experience, including, speciality experience and knowledge Basic IT skills in word processing & spreadsheets Experience in initiation & implementation of change Knowledge of professional and NHS issues

Desirable

Participation in service development projects Knowledge of, and participation in, financial management within the clinical setting
